Boogie Nights By Pat Ashworth for The Stage
This revival of Jon Conway's hit seventies musical takes Birmingham by storm, leaving the first night audience at the Alexandra begging for more. It is sensational, not just because it pumps out the classic disco hits as expected but because it has a real cutting edge.
At times it is one huge party, superbly lit and choreographed, with numbers like YMCA even more outrageously performed than the original. Sam Kane and Sophie Lawrence give big, clear, assured performances as Denny and Debs. He is the love rat, goading and provoking the female audience, while she gets waves of empathy as the cheated one in the chauvinistic culture of seventies Britain.
