Review in The Times.

Quote:
SINCE the mid-1990s Jasmin Vardimon has been working her way steadily up the ranks of British-based dance-theatre practitioners. Her small-scale but consistently strong productions wed a distinctive, inventively detailed kinetic style to dark-humoured, character-driven dramatic situations. Yet somehow, despite her eponymous company’s extensive British and international tour schedule, she has mostly — and unjustly — flown below mainstream critical radar.

On the brink between pain and pleasure. With Ticklish, Jasmin Vardimon has created a brilliantly volatile piece of dance theatre! She has skillfully compiled lust, thrust, pride and persistence. A couple “gets it on” with a plank between them, a quirky gal is propped-up on a human-size pegboard, a golden girl persistently spins her Frisbee and a businessman clowns with his own giant reflection. The two women and two men are real people in real relationships. They chew gum and chat with purposely-incomprehensible dialogue. Upon a stage void of excess, they tease and annoy each other to the point of aggression. The tender and quirky moments are unsustainable: raunch and violence break through. From opening credits to banter, the interaction between live performers and video is beyond clever. The company has worked to spectacular precision. They use bits of the set, as well as each other, as props. My only criticism of Vardimon’s choreography is its tendency to split focus. Yet Vardimon kindly structures the repetition to prevent you missing anything. Being relevant, hip and accessible, Ticklish is an ideal introduction to contemporary dance.
