But in 1999 Mr. Louis closed down the dance company and its school, a cauldron of creative activity since 1949. Earlier, he videotaped most of the repertory.
As one of modern dance's most eloquent dancers, he preserved a record of his own performances in this way. Under the umbrella of the extant Nikolais-Louis Foundation for Dance, he has used the tapes to stage his and Mr. Nikolais's works in selected companies and in colleges.
