Baryshnikov Takes His Building for a Test Run

Now he is overseeing something else, the much-bruited, still almost stealthy Baryshnikov Arts Center. It was supposed to open in 2004. Then it was November. Except there was no official, or at least publicly advertised, opening date, no gala hoo-ha. And the center, on the top three floors (plus roof access) of a new six-story building at 450 West 37th Street in the garment district, has already been functioning for several months.

...heady list of artistic advisers Mr. Baryshnikov has assembled - people like Pedro Almodóvar, Pina Bausch, Trisha Brown, William Forsythe, Gidon Kremer, Mark Morris, David Salle, Peter Sellars and Sam Shepard.

There is a $7 million goal for the center's portion of the building. Kick-started by a $1 million donation from Mr. Baryshnikov, the campaign has reached $6 million.
