I just got a release about Anita Amirrezvani starting with San Francisco Performances. It's great for them, although I've missed her dance writing.
Former San Jose Mercury News journalist Anita Amirrezvani joins city's largest independent arts presenter July 25
SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- San Francisco Performances has named Anita Amirrezvani as the organization's new Director of Public Relations and Publications, effective July 25.
Ms. Amirrezvani is the former dance critic for the San Jose Mercury News, where she also served as a staff writer. Previously, she was assistant arts editor for the Contra Costa Times.
In this position, Ms. Amirrezvani joins the senior management of the city's largest independent performing arts presenter. Each season, San Francisco Performances brings more than fifty of the world's finest artists to the Bay Area for some 80 performances of recitals, dance, jazz and chamber music. The nonprofit organization also provides a free and extensive arts education program to Bay Area public schools, embedding top artists in classrooms for lengthy residencies that are designed to change lives.
"Anita is exceptionally talented and we are delighted she is joining our staff," said Ruth Felt, president and founder of San Francisco Performances. "She is an accomplished writer and an award-winning journalist with a great passion for and knowledge of the arts."
Ms. Amirrezvani will oversee all media relations and publications activities of the organization, and will also help develop new Internet initiatives.
A long-time Berkeley resident, Ms. Amirrezvani earned her A.B. in English literature from U.C. Berkeley. She served as a senior editor and staff writer at PC World magazine in the early years of the personal technology boom.
In 1997, she was one of 10 journalists selected for the National Arts Journalism Program in New York, and in 2003 the NEA/New York Times awarded her a fellowship to attend the Institute for Dance Criticism at the American Dance Festival. She also earned a prestigious writing fellowship from Hedgebrook, where she completed work on a novel set in 17th-century Iran.
Ms. Amirrezvani's articles have appeared in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Christian Science Monitor and other publications.
