Bridewell blow bodes ill for the ‘Off-West End’ From The Stage
It is a sad irony that a year which has seen the opening of several major London musicals and a concerted effort to develop an ‘Off-West End’ network will close with the extinction of a venue whose theatrical contribution has been out of all proportion to its diminutive size.
The Bridewell Theatre has for more than a decade provided a platform for new British product. This country - London in particular - prides itself as the home of drama. Yet the number of our equivalents to Off-Broadway remains tiny compared with the mighty provision of New York itself or even Chicago.
