<B>Arts Society President To Retire</B> <BR>Douglas Wheeler Led WPAS for Two Decades. By Jacqueline Trescott in The Washington Post: <P><BR>Douglas Wheeler, the president of the Washington Performing Arts Society and a prime architect of its growth into a leading regional arts organization, announced yesterday that he is retiring next September.<P>Wheeler, 61, has been associated with WPAS for 31 years and has been its president for two decades.<P>WPAS is a nonprofit organization that presents live performances throughout the region. Under Wheeler's leadership the group has offered performances that range from top violinists booked into the Kennedy Center to massive gospel music shows at Constitution Hall to African theater groups at Lisner Auditorium at George Washington University to Asian dance troupes at George Mason University's arts center.<P><A HREF="" TARGET=_blank><B>click for more</B></A>
