Broadening Barking’s arts provision By Peter Hepple for The Stage
For too long Barking has had no real arts profile but that is about to change with The Broadway, a 950-capacity venue which also houses a college of performing arts, writes Peter Hepple
Barking is curious sort of place. Sandwiched between East Ham and Dagenham, it has an abbey church and a lively street market. Together with Dagenham, it forms a London borough and yet is in Essex. Its railway station - serving the District, Hammersmith and City lines and a regular and latterly improved service to Southend - is surprisingly large.
