I am very happy that Lawrence Halprin's team will be designing the changes to Stern Grove. They have a track record of creating something practical yet beautiful that still respects the original surroundings:

Stern Grove redesign has classical note

Lawrence Halprin was basking in the bucolic scene at Stern Grove a few years ago, listening to the San Francisco Symphony and lunching at a picnic table with Dick Goldman, the philanthropist whose late wife, Rhoda Haas Goldman, was a member of the pioneer San Francisco family that gave the sylvan grove to the city in 1931. more

And now it's being done.

Progress in the park: There haven't been a whole lot of changes to Stern Grove since its creation by the Works Progress Administration back in the '30s, but just wait till you get a load of the new and vastly improved Stern Grove when the 68th season opens on June 19.

Thank god they're doing new dressing rooms. The old ones were dark, dank, smelly, moldy, dirty and tiny. It was hard to work wardrobe there and keep costumes clean.

djb, I think the intent of the design was to try to keep everything about the same, with the renovation doing the minimal to make the grove comfortable for audiences.

Now, the question is who's opening for the reopening now that SFB has pulled out?

New seats and dancin' feet
Crowd pleased with $15 million Stern Grove upgrade

Like the thousands of people gathered for the first concert of the season at San Francisco's Stern Grove concert park, Verlyn Fischer was awestruck.

"It's amazing. It's fantastic. It's phenomenal," he said between bites of crackers as he and friends listened to pop singer John Doe, once part of the band X.

The most popular aspect of the $15 million overhaul was seating that made it possible for the audience to sit still.
