James Raisbeck has written a response to Saturday's "Chorus of Criticism" piece in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Mr. Raisbeck is a generous donor and supporter of both Pacific Nortwest Ballet and Seattle Opera:

I love Mr Raisbeck's letter, especially:

Quote:
It is not important that all of us enjoy the same forms of entertainment available to us. It is, however, necessary for all of us to support them all, including basketball, football, baseball, the ballet and the opera for our common good.

It forms an important element of Seattle's civic pride.

The Seattle City Council has approved the proposal to issue bonds in order to create a bridge loan for the project to ensure the June 2003 opening. News items in both papers.

Melinda Bargreen reports in the January 26 Seattle Times about the struggle to keep the fundraising momentum alive for McCaw Hall. Failure to complete the fundraising could lead to dire consequences for Seattle Opera and Pacific Northwest Ballet, including the likelihood of higher rents impacting their operating budgets and facilities surcharges cutting into their ticket buyers:

Melinda Bargreen provides an update on the status of private fundraising for the project, detailing the most recent announcement of $1 million from Bill Neukom (former Microsoft chief legal counsel), $1 million from an anonymous donor, and $250K each from the Forest Foundation, Bagley Wright Foundation and William and Gail Weyerhaeuser. Mr. Neukom has had a long involvement with the Corporate Council for the Arts and Mr. Wright established an eponymous foundation and personally decides who shall be awarded funds. (I have noted that both Mr. Neukom and Mr. Wright favor bow ties, for whatever truth that may reveal.)
