Not exactly sure where to post this, but since part of the article is about impact on other Boston productions during the holiday season, decided to put it here. From Geoff Edgers in the Boston Globe: Wang Theatre and Rockettes give sneak peak of holiday show

On a positive ballet note, I hear things are going well with Boston Ballet's plans for a smaller - though full length - production of Nutcracker for 2004 (to be presented in the Colonial Theater). It is very possible that having a smaller production available, in addition to the large one that will be in the Opera House in 2005+, will turn out to be a good thing for the ballet.

Ah, so this is not necessarily a bad thing then...

I assume the ballet would rather not have gone through the crisis, but is making lemonade from the lemons presented. Should be good lemonade too!

Cross-posted for continuity...

From Goeff Edgers in the Boston Globe, a report on the impact of "Lion King" and Rockettes' Christmas show on local arts organization, including the ballet: Local shows strain to outkick holiday rivals
Quote:
.... local arts leaders haven’t had much fun visiting their box offices in recent weeks. They’ve seen ticket sales soften and their high hopes of hitting revenue goals dwindle during the all-important holiday season.

While Radio City officials say they’re selling more tickets than they expected, the locals who once owned the holiday box office -- including Boston Ballet, Revels, and the Handel and Haydn Society -- are sharing an unwelcome problem: They’re all running behind last year’s pace for ticket sales.

Another point of view, from Louise Kennedy of the Boston Globe: Competition may kick-start a finer art

....
...the more complicated question, and the one that has some arts patrons up in arms, is what it all means. Is this yet another case of corporate greed and downmarket schlock smothering the delicate flower that is high art? Maybe. But I think there's something a little more interesting going on.

It looks like Colorado also feared the Rockettes:

Teeth were gnashed and hair was pulled in the corridors and rehearsal studios of Colorado Ballet last year, when the company learned the Rockettes were coming. more

Sounds like they made out better than Boston. As mentioned in an earlier post in the "BB & Wang' thread ( Holiday Arts Shows Suffer at Box Office) the Rockettes contributed to a slump across various holiday productions in Boston. Josiah Spaulding is probably feeling good about his decision...
