In the eighties and nineties, there had been two musicians' strikes, budget cuts that shut down the resident theatre companies and the opera festival while still leaving crippling deficits, and a parade of briefly lived executive directors. And then there were the harebrained schemes to turn the centre either into a giant TV studio beaming its performances across the country or into a roadhouse for commercial producers.
