Robyn Allan was best known in Vancouver (Canada) for her high profile position at the Insurance Corporation of BC, the provincial auto insurer. At 32 she decided that what she really wanted to do was have a dance company--and dance in that company. She hired professional dancers and put on a show, and what an odd show it was. At the time I thought her dancing was amateurish as was her choreography. The show reminded me of a school recital in its tone, mixing modernish-ballet, showy jazz numbers and some butoh thrown in for good measure. I thought that had to be the first and last show. But Allan has pressed on forming Vancouver Dance Theatre. And the people who work for her say she pays really well. The Globe & Mail article reports that Allan's partner thinks that people in the arts community resent Allan because she hasn't "suffered" enough as an artist. I don't think that's it. It has more do with the fact that she's a connected person who got the money together before she could deliver the goods. I guess that's show business!
From the Globe & Mail, 02/28/01:

quote:
Takin' care of dance
Robyn Allan used to be one of Canada's
top CEOs. Well, several have been accused of buying their own company to dance in, here in the US... Frankly, I'm not sure it's such a bad thing if the company produces quality performances.
