An interesting article about audience patterns for the Arts focussing on age demographics. The Joffrey is discussed. I have to say that I thought that 'Billboards' saved the Joffrey from bakruptcy rather than precipitating it. The show came to London and was panned big time. If it saved the Company and brougbt in a few younger balletr goers I can see the point. Dance companies can do a variety of work for a variety of audiences in my view.

Going Against The Graying: Arts Groups Aim For Young Patrons
By Megan Rosenfeld in The Washington Post

On a recent night at the National Symphony, an elderly man with a cane carefully found his way to his seat in the best part of the house. The music was so transporting that he nodded off, and as he nodded, his hearing aids fell out. He was not physically able to pick them up, unfortunately. A lady nearby used her cane to nudge them closer, but that didn't help.
Sometime later another music patron, seeing the trouble, returned the devices to their owner -- only to find that in the interim, the man had once again dozed off.
click for more
[This message has been edited by Stuart Sweeney (edited December 26, 2001).]
