Harlem Dance Theatre in financial trouble

Dance Theatre has struggled to remain solvent for three months. The company is about to hire its first executive director to try to restore financial stability, but no one has been named yet.

One wonders whether Arthur Mitchell, the theater's founding artistic director, with a reputation for keeping a tight rein on the organization, will loosen his grip enough to allow Mr. Naidu, the former director of the company's dance school, to really call the administrative shots.

When Mehdi Bahiri learned that Dance Theater of Harlem was laying off its dancers last year, he said, "I jumped." He snapped up a group of them for the 14-member Fugate/Bahiri Ballet NY, which opens a week's run at the Joyce Theater on Tuesday.
