Dancers take contract dispute with management before ballet-goers

A contract dispute prompted Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre dancers to hand out leaflets outside the Benedum Center, Downtown, for Thursday's opening of "Cleopatra."

The message of the pink leaflets: "Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre wants to charge you $75 to see a student recital!" The leaflets urged patrons to call ballet managing director Steven Libman to complain.

Corps, soloist and principal dancers say they are protesting management's decision to dilute the professional company with student dancers next year while hiking ticket prices by 10 percent. Management is trying to cut dancers' salaries and benefits while reducing the number of professional dancers to an all-time low, says an attorney for the union that represents the dancers.

Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, dancers reach tentative agreement

Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and its dancers have reached a tentative agreement on a new four-year contract.

The 23 professional dancers and five apprentice dancers, who are represented by the American Guild of Musical Artists, are expected to ratify their new contract July 28.

The new contract sets a ratio between the number of professional and student dancers in the company. It also allows dancers to keep their current work schedule of 38 weeks per year. Dancers' wages will be frozen the first year, increasing 1.5 percent in the second year, 2 percent the third year and 3 percent the fourth year.
