Post subject:  La Cantata dei Pastori

Have a Southern Italian Christmas with I Giullari di Piazza (The Jesters of the Square) when they present their hilarious family holiday show, "La Cantata dei Pastori" (The Shepherd's Cantata), a riotous musical version of a 17th century play by Andrea Perrucci, still performed annually on the streets of Naples and environs. Led by renowned singer/percussionist Alessandra Belloni, a native of Rome and specialist in traditional Southern Italian folk music/theater/dance, I Giullari takes viewers back in time to witness the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem. Along the way, they have spectacular adventures; the Devil dispatches his demons to try to stop the birth of Jesus, but they have to battle the Archangel Gabriel (played by a stiltwalker in traditional fashion). On their journey, the couple meets Razzullo, a hilarious commedia dell'arte character, played by Giuseppe de Falco, native of Naples and commedia specialist - to name just two of their adventures. The play is performed in Italian with English narration by La Befana, the Italian good witch of Christmas who brings sweets to the children who have been good and coal to those who have been bad. In the end, Mary gives birth and all celebrate by singing the oldest recorded Neapolitan Christmas song. Musical version by John La Barbera, adapted and directed by Alessandra Belloni. At Theater for the New City, 155 First Avenue (between 9th & 10th Streets). December 16, 17, 21, 22 at 8 PM; December 18 at 5 PM. Tickets: $25 Reservations at 212.254.1109 http://www.theaterforthenewcity.net
