H.T. Chen and Dancers present the NY premiere of their major new dance/theater work, "South of Gold Mountain," the compelling story of Chinese immigrants who settled in U.S. southern states. Researched over a 3-year period, and co-choreographed by H.T. Chen and Dian Dong, this unique work was drawn from rich oral histories told by immigrants and their descendants, treasured images, and official and private documentation. Despite their rural isolation, discrimination, and racism, the new residents helped to build America by working on railroads, levees, plantations, and as grocers, launderers, and later as restaurant owners. Bessie Award winner james Lo has created a contemporary sound score, along with traditional Chinese music and deep south blues for this enlightening story of immigration, civil rights, and assimilation. Oct. 15-18 at New York Live Arts, 219 West 19th Street. (Thurs/Fri/Sat at 7:30 PM; Sunday at 3 PM) Reservations: 212.924.0077 or http://www.newyorklivearts.org/season, or at the theater box office.
