(New York, NY; June 27, 2013) -- BALAM Dance Theatre (BALAM) will present Ramayana: Kecak for the Catskill Mountains, during its residency in Hunter, New York from July 1-12. BALAM, a New York City-based ensemble dance company, will offer a workshop inspired by the Balinese Kecak, the monkey chant, for children from the communities of Hunter and Tannersville, New York and end the residency with a performance.

BALAM will present an eight-day Balinese dance and vocal workshop inspired by the Balinese Kecak. Elementary school children will receive lessons drawn upon stories from the Hindu epic Ramayana and be introduced to a daily warm-up based on karate katas, Balinese dance, vocal chants and their supporting body movements, and Balinese mask work. Throughout the workshop, the New York State Board of Education’s arts guidelines will be followed, and the children will create their own choreographic segments.

The culmination of the company’s residency will be a performance with the children in vibrant costumes of BALAM’s signature work, Ramayana: Abduction of Sita, on Friday, July 12 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Hunter Elementary School. The performance is free and open to the public.

A highlight of the performance will be the children’s Kecak, a vocal chorus of accented sounds that emulate the polyrhythmic layers of gamelan music associated with Balinese dance and the beloved character Hanuman, the monkey king. The children will also create and perform other fantasy masked animal characters in the production.

This intensive is presented as part of the Mountain Top Summer Residency Performance, a summer enrichment program presented by the Catskill Mountain Foundation. BALAM’s residency is supported in part by the Puffin Foundation Ltd. and the Catskill Mountain Foundation.

One thing that I have noticed is that they are quite much energetic and also very active. I like such activities in education and I would say that there should be more activities like that so the students should not be only book worm but active students.
