Further background information:

Prometheus Dance, Inc. is a Cambridge-based, organization comprised of a highly visible and established full-season performing company (Prometheus Dance), an elders performing group (The Elders Ensemble) and a quality arts outreach and education program, each of which reaches a diverse community throughout metro-Boston, New England, New York, Europe and South America. Founded in 1987, co-Artistic Directors Diane Arvanites & Tommy Neblett create original choreography, performance works and art education curriculum that illuminates vital social issues, challenges perceptions, inspires creative and critical thinking and promotes human and cultural understanding. More than 700,000 elders, adults, and children have witnessed and/or participated in Prometheus’ concerts, performances, documentaries, in-school activities, and outreach presentations in its twenty five-year history.

The art of Prometheus is socially relevant, physically astonishing, theatrically engaging and promotes life affirming ideas. Works are often content driven, developed from social, political, or psychological concepts. Prometheus uses dance as a means of diplomacy that transcends language and cultural barriers.

Apart from self producing and creating workshops, performances, and events within the community, the company has been produced at home and nationally by the Celebrity Series, Dance Umbrella, Lincoln Center, Joyce SoHo Theatre, Crash Arts, Opera Boston, The Yard, International Festival of Arts & Ideas, NE Artists’ Trust Congress, Boston Center for the Arts, Emerson Stage, First Night, The Multicultural Arts Center, Walnut Hill School for the Arts, and the Boston Conservatory. The company has traveled abroad on many occasions and has facilitated cultural echanges that have been invaluable for artists and audiences of varied countries. Prometheus has been presented abroad by: Frente de Danza Independiente, Sala Mariana De Jesus, and Teatro Sucre in Ecuador; Teatre L'Olivier and Teatre Minotor in France; Sala Galan and En Pe de Pedra in Spain; and El Teatro Colonial de Valencia in Venezuela. They have also been local producers for European and South American companies, i.e. presenting an Ecuadorian festival of choreography, Teatro Galan Theatre Company, Itinnerances on several occasions, and Accion Collectiva of Venezuela.

Prometheus hosts a series of workshops and masterclasses held at the Dance Complex with the aim of developing a global information and education exchange. These workshops are open to dancers within the community and New England at large. Some of these workshops develop into performance opportunities for the company and dancers. Artistic Directors Diane Arvanites and Tommy Neblett also teach masterclasses and set work for universities, colleges, conservatories, and professional artists. They have taught nationally in Maine, Connecticut, Vermont, Virginia, Rhode Island, and Texas, and internationally in Denmark, Venezuela, Ecuador, France, and Spain.
