(September 9, 2010 -- New York, NY) --BALAM Dance Theatre (BALAM) will present “The Melon Peel”, an authentic and hilarious Commedia dell’Arte monologue at the 2010 DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL, 25 Jay Street, Brooklyn, New York on Sunday, September 26, 2010, from 5-6 p.m. The festival is open and FREE to the public.

BALAM creates a new vision of contemporary dance by fusing Balinese theatre and diverse cultural movement styles from around the world. “The Melon Peel” features Inma Heredia, BALAM’s resident guest actor, in this bawdy monologue created with period gestures and choreography by BALAM’s artistic director, Carlos Fittante, a Baroque dance specialist. This period solo utilizes principles from the Baroque system of declamatory acting and draws upon Ms. Heredia’s natural comedic ability and physical skill to bring to life the character of Isabella, a sixteenth century woman. Through the recounting of her spicy coming of age story, Isabella brazenly challenges the hypocrisy and social inequities of gender roles in love and marriage.

The DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL, under the direction of Young Soon Kim, is produced by WHITE WAVE at the John Ryan Theatre and celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. The festival runs from September 23-26 and will showcase a kaleidoscope of cutting-edge, contemporary dance through the selected works of 80 choreographers and companies.

Inma Heredia, known as Flamenco’s first and only stand up comedienne, premiered in ‘The Melon Peel” earlier this year to rave reviews in La Lupa Festival in Los Angeles, California. Born and raised in Seville, Spain, Ms. Heredia has salero, a distinctive charm and charisma that endow her with a special appeal as a performer. She performs as special event master of ceremonies, entertainer, and actor and has numerous theatre, Spanish dance, film and television credits. She has trained at the London’s Stopgap Theatre Company, the Gardzienice Centre for Theatre Practices in Poland, and the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in New York City, where she now resides.

BALAM offers a new vision of contemporary dance that emanates from a cutting-edge fusion of diverse cultural dance styles and movement techniques. The company’s fusion repertoire presents an opulent dance theatre that blends contemporary choreography, eclectic music, striking masks, imaginative props, and vibrant costumes to create a performance that appeals to audiences of all ages and backgrounds.

In 1979, Islene Pinder, a Lehman College dance educator, founded the company and brought the mesmerizing Balinese dance theatre style to New York audiences. Under the directorship of Spanish-American choreographer Carlos Fittante, BALAM’s fusion repertoire blends boldly divergent dance styles and movements, including ballet, Spanish, Lester Horton, Baroque, Latin, Hip-Hop, Noh, and karate, as well as Balinese.

BALAM has been featured at several distinguished festivals and venues, such as First Night New York; Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors; La Mama Experimental Theatre, New York, New York; Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, Lee, Massachusetts, and many others. The company has also appeared internationally at the Bali Arts Festival in Denpasar, Bali and the 2nd Encuentro Internacíonal de Danza Contemporánea in Cancún, Mexico.

The company’s work has received critical recognition from the New York Times and Village Voice. The Governor and people of Bali and the Indonesian Consulate of New York have highly commended its performances.
