The Natasha Carlitz Dance Ensemble returns to the Cowell Theater for an evening of premieres and repertory works, all featuring the company's signature blend of daring athleticism with shape, colour, and musicality. Program highlights include the premieres of "Catulli Carmina," a dramatic rendering of anguished Latin love poetry set to music by Carl Orff, and "Current," a charging, flowing trio with guitar music commissioned from Bert Lams and Tom Griesgraber.

The evening also features reprises of "Time. Running. Out" and "Tempus Fugit," both met with acclaim in the company's 2009 season at the Cowell. Critic Paul Hertelendy described "Tempus Fugit," set to Beethoven's haunting Violin Concerto in D Major, as "a bit of slow motion, satin-smooth, reminiscent of choreographer Antony Tudor, with dancers casting coy and enigmatic glances out toward the house, and making effortless falls and rises to the stage." A revival of the decade-old work "Linear Transformations" adds joy and light to the program, as the dancers wield bright elastic streamers which help bring form to a dizzying mathematical exploration.

The ten local dancers of the ensemble, from varied dance backgrounds, bring strong technique and energy to these modern works. This concert is part of the In Performance Series at the Fort Mason Center Cowell Theater, which is supported by Grants for the Arts/San Francisco Hotel Tax Fund, The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and the Fort Mason Center.

Natasha Carlitz founded the Dance Ensemble in 2005 to bring her innovative movement to audiences throughout the Bay Area. The company performs powerful choreography based on themes ranging from abstract mathematical concepts to the physical puzzles posed by unusual spaces. Carlitz's movement style draws on a range of influences, including workshops with Pilobolus founder Jonathan Wolken, a stint at Amsterdam's School for New Dance Development, and early training from Grace Butler, a former Nikolais dancer. In November 2006, the company presented its first evening-length concert at the Cowell in collaboration with the world-renowned California Guitar Trio. Last January, the Dance Ensemble presented its 2009 season, "Time Flies (when you're having fun)."

Having grown up dancing in Palo Alto, Natasha Carlitz has performed around the Bay Area with Judith Komoroske's Creative Dance Workshop, VogtAr t , and others; from 1998 through 2005 she danced and choreographed with the collective High Release Dance. Her work has been seen in ODC San Francisco, DanceVisions, sjDanceCo, and High Release performances, as well as the Dancin' Downtown Festival in San Jose and the Performance Showcase and Retail Dance Festival, both in San Francisco. She produced concerts of her work in 2002 (San Jose) and 2005 (Palo Alto) and in 2003 received a commission for opening of an exhibit of original art. In February 2005, Carlitz was named one of "ten Bay Area choreographers to watch" by sjDanceCo.

The Natasha Carlitz Dance Ensemble comes to the Cowell Theater at Fort Mason Center for just two performances, January 29 and 30 at 8:00 pm. Tickets ($24 general admission, $14 for students, with a discount on all advance purchases) are available at the Fort Mason Center Box Office, 415-345-7575, or online through http://www.fortmason.org.
