Tap City 2009, Tony Waag, director, begins its celebration of tap, that
unique American dance form, with a Tap Jam at Joe's Pub (July 6), makes a
midtown stop at Lincoln Center for the 2009 Tap City Awards Ceremony (July 8),
and continues uptown to Symphony Space for performances of adult students,
young tappers, and "The Main Event," with some of the best tappers in the
world (July 9 & 10). Highlights of this 9th Annual Tap City are the
recreations of two Brenda Bufalino works, made possible by grants from the
National Endowment for the Arts as part of American Masterpieces: Three
Centuries of Artistic Genius.

The American Tap Dance Foundation kicks off its annual weeklong
festival, Tap
City, with this up close and personal event. Produced in assocation with
Awoye Timpo, tappers from around the world will join forces for a night of
tap improvisation. The live jazz trio features Bernice (Boom-Boom)
Brooks on drums, Jess Jurkovic on piano, and Joe Fonda on bass. The evening
will be hosted by Barbara Duffy, a tap veteran known and respected around
the world as a dancer/teacher.

THE 2009 TAP CITY AWARDS CEREMONY
Wednesday July 8, 8 to 9:30 PM
NY Public Library for the Performing Arts/Bruno Walter Auditorium, 111
Amsterdam Avenue (just south of 65th Street)
Free admission - first come, first served
Hosted by Tony Waag, "the pied piper of tap" (The New York Times),
and tap historian Constance Valis Hill, this event will feature film
presentations to honor this year's awardees and a Tribute to Brenda Bufalino.
The New Tap Dance Orchestra, will perform Bufalino's "Buff Loves Basie
Blues," premiered in 1991 at The Joyce Theater. Inspired by Count Basie riffs
and themes, the work stands as a tribute from Bufalino to Basie and to her
mentor, Charles "Honi" Coles. Live music will accompany the ensemble of
eleven dancers, which includes Olivia Rosenkrantz, Ms. Bufalino's
Reconstruction Assistant. This year's awardees are:

Tap City includes everyone! This concert offers a performance
opportunity to adult students (aged 15+), teachers, professional and senior
ensembles who have the urge to emerge. It's a chance to see and to be seen.
Amateur and professional groups from around the U.S. and the world will
be showcased, as well as works-in-progress showings by students in the Adult
Residencies.

TAP YOUTH/TAP FUTURE

Snappy young groups of young tappers (ages 6-19) will perform,
showcasing themselves and the choreography of their teachers. Guests are Tap
City Youth Ensemble, that amazing young group that has recently been the
subject of feature articles in Dance Teacher and Dancer Magazines (and how
can we not brag about Youth Program Director Susan Hebach appearing on the
cover of Dance Teacher).

TAP CITY 2009 - 'THE MAIN EVENT'

Once again, the Mayor of Tap City Tony Waag has gathered an
eclectic cast of legendary tap dance veterans, cutting edge soloists,
contemporary ensembles, and the hottest new hoofers on the scene today. A highlight
of the evening will be the premiere performance of the New Tap Dance
Orchestra, dancing a recreation of "The Haitian Fight Song," Brenda Bufalino's
most celebrated work and a seminal piece in the canon of tap. Set to a
musical score by Charles Mingus, the work premiered in 1987 at the Cotton Club
and was also presented in 1998 on PBS' "Great Performances - Tap Dance in
America."
The international cast for "The Main Event" is a tap lovers dream:

Tap City includes classes and workshops, July 6-11, morning to night for
dancers of all ages and styles, and on all levels, taught by a remarkable
