Other
Suns is a world premiere trilogy of dances created by Margaret
Jenkins and her company in a cross-cultural collaboration with the Guangdong
Modern Dance Company of Guangzhou, China. Jenkins investigates symmetry
and asymmetry in both Chinese and American cultures. Through an intricate
blend of contemporary dance forms, Other Suns transcends national
and cultural barriers, offering a new perspective on balance and imbalance
in our fast-changing, global society.
Music for Other Suns was composed by Paul Dresher and will be
performed live by the Paul Dresher Ensemble, with additional music by
Bun Ching-Lam. Other Suns also features a visual design by Alexander
V. Nichols and costumes by Laura Hazlett and Vivi Zhang.
Donate
now to help bring Other Suns to life! MJDC is actively fundraising
to complete this important intercultural exchange. Your donation will
directly support MJDC artists’ salaries and rehearsal expenses to
complete this trilogy with the artists from China. Numerous sponsorship
levels are also available; please contact

SUMMER
WORKSHOP
WITH MARGARET JENKINS
“The Practice of Collaboration”
June 22 – 26, 2009
at the Margaret Jenkins Dance Lab, San Francisco, CA
More and more choreographers are incorporating the creative input of their
dancers into their work. This workshop examines the skills advanced and
professional level dancers need to work effectively and creatively in a
collaborative environment. Participants will investigate in an ensemble
setting how to generate material based on concepts, images, text and poetry.
Jenkins will share her philosophy on the “etiquette of
collaboration”
– guidelines for useful communication with directors and other dancers.
Jenkins will be assisted by Joseph Copley and other members of the Margaret
Jenkins Dance Company.
