The Berliner Festspiele's dance and theatre season, under the artistic directorship
of Brigitte Fürle since 2006, will present "The Giants Arrive - A Fairy Tale for
Berlin" from 1st to 4th October outdoors and free of charge on the 20th anniversary
of the fall of the wall. Using significant locations in the German capital such as
the Brandenburg Gate, Unter den Linden and the Rotes Rathaus puppets up to 15 metres
in height from the legendary French street theatre company Royal de Luxe will tell a
story of rediscovery after a long separation which has been specially created for
Berlin. As in their recent performances in London in 2006 and in Santiago de Chile
in 2007, the Little Giant and the Big Giant will enchant an audience of millions in
Berlin and awaken memories of the great emotions of 1989.
"A gift from the Berliner Festspiele to the people of the city." (Joachim Sartorius,
Artistic Director, Berliner Festspiele)
On 9th June a new homepage will be launched dedicated to this performance:

The season in the Haus der Berliner Festspiele will open in November with the German
premiere of the dance theatre piece "Eonnagata", a collaborative creation between
Robert Lepage, Sylvie Guillem and Russell Maliphant. "Eonnagata" tells the
extraordinary life story of the Chevalier d'Éon, a diplomat and spy at the French
court in the mid 18th century, who was famous for his extravagant lifestyle and
appearing in public in ladies' clothing for many years.
(German premiere 12th - 15th November 2009)

Wolfgang Rihm's "Jagden und Formen (2008 version)" brings together the Ensemble
Modern and Sasha Waltz & Guests, two ensembles of brilliant soloists who succeed in
uniting new music and contemporary dance in a remarkable way. This revival marks
the opening of a lengthy collaboration between spielzeit'europa and Sasha Waltz &
Guests to be continued over several seasons.
(Revival 20th + 21st November 2009)

The prima ballerina of the Berlin State Ballet, Nadja Saidakova, choreographs her
first full length piece "Egopoint" for three female and six male dancers. The music
for this co-production between spielzeit'europa and Berlin State Ballet is created
by Luke Slater, one of the leading DJs of the international club scene.
(World premiere 28th + 29th November 2009)

British dance icon Michael Clark returns to Berlin once again after a lengthy
absence. His new production is dedicated to the rock trinity of David Bowie, Lou
Reed and Iggy Pop.
(German premiere 4th + 5th December 2009)

Pina Bausch's dance piece from 1976 "The Seven Deadly Sins" made theatrical history.
This legendary Brecht-Weill production has been revived at the Tanztheater Wuppertal
and now comes to spielzeit'europa in Berlin. It features Josephine Ann Endicott and
Mechthild Großmann, two of Pina Bausch's closest collaborators and both members of
the original cast.
(10th - 13th December 2009)

The season finishes with another appearance by Sasha Waltz & Guests. "Impromptus" to
Franz Schubert's late impromptus and Lieder is the first time the choreographer has
created a full length work to classical music. In dialogue with the emotions of
unfulfilled desires and loneliness which the music evokes, she has succeeded in
creating a dance piece of penetrating intimacy.
(16th + 17th, 19th + 20th December 2009)

The performances are supplemented by an extensive fringe programme with dance films
including the preview of "Sylvie Guillem. Dancing on the Volcano", a documentary by
ARTE France, book launches, audience discussions, parties and much more.

Booking opens on 9th June 2009. Further information is available online at or by telephone on (030) 254 89 100.

This year's spielzeit'europa press conference will be held in September in a hangar
at Tempelhof airport, Royal de Luxe's Berlin rehearsal space. The date will be
announced in good time.

With kind regards
