GABRIELA POLER-BUZALI IS NAMED EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE LIMÓN DANCE
COMPANY
Carla Maxwell, Artistic Director, and the Board of the José Limón Dance
Foundation are pleased to announce the appointment of Gabriela Poler-Buzali
as Executive Director, beginning July 1st. Poler-Buzali, who was Executive
Director of Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas (POA) for the past
three years, will replace Lisa Barnes, who was Interim Executive Director for
the last nine months. José Limón Dance Foundation, 2008 recipient of the
National Medal of Arts, is home to the renowned Limón Dance Company, the
longest continuously operating modern dance repertory company in America.
With this appointment, Poler-Buzali returns to her first love of dance.
Raised in Caracas, Venezuela, and fluent in Spanish and English, Gabriela
moved to New York City in 1995. She continued her dance training with Nancy
Bielski, and worked as a dancer and choreographer for Infinity Dance
Theater. She also performed with several other companies, including
Battleworks.
Moving more into arts administration, Gabriela was the Executive Assistant
and Manager of the New York International Ballet Competition from 2000 to
2005; then, the Development Officer at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center,
where she expanded the donor base, brought in new sources of funding,
recruited new board members, and produced one of the organization’s first major
Galas, honoring Ron Carter, among others.
In 2006, Gabriela accepted the position of Executive Director of the
Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas, founded in 2004 by Mexican Conductor
Alondra de la Parra. In her three years at POA, Gabriela tripled the size of
the organization; she produced more than thirty concerts for more than
twenty thousand audience members, two international tours, served almost one
thousand children through arts and education programs, discovered talent
through the creation of two young composers’ competitions, and managed a film
soundtrack with renowned film director Michel Gondry.
She holds a master’s degree in arts administration from Teachers College
at Columbia University and a bachelors degree in Dance from The Boston
Conservatory.
The Limón Dance Company and Limón Institute welcome Gabriela and look
forward to continuing their busy schedule of tours at home and abroad,
residencies, New York performances, and education and dissemination of Limón’s
legacy.
