CHEZ BUSHWICK
Chez Bushwick, an artist-run organization based in Brooklyn, is dedicated to the
advancement of interdisciplinary art and performance, with a strong focus on new
choreography. Since its inception in 2002, the organization has been acknowledged as
a new model for economic sustainability in the performing arts, offering New York
City's only $5 subsidy for rehearsal space, and thereby fostering the creation,
development, and performance of new work. Chez Bushwick is also responsible for a
number of monthly performance programs that encourage artistic freedom,
collaboration, and creative risk-taking.
The organization's commitment to cultural programming of superior quality would not
be possible without Patsy Tarr, a Founding Board Member since the organization's
inception. This evening is dedicated to Patsy Tarr, Abbott Miller, and 2wice - with
gratitude from all who have benefited from their work.
2WICE
For the last 10 years the 2wice Arts Foundation, founded by Patsy Tarr, has
supported dancers, choreographers, and photographers through a unique publishing
venture that brings the beauty and immediacy of dance to the printed page. The
Foundation produces 2wice, a bi-annual performing arts publication that focuses on a
particular theme, dancer, or choreographer. The result is a series of remarkable
documents that feature some of the world's leading talents in the performing arts
and photography.
Design has been central to the development of 2wice: Abbott Miller has designed each
publication as a distinct visual environment involving art direction, typography and
set design. 2wice has been recognized with major awards from the design,
photography, and performing arts communities for its innovation and sustained
commitment to excellence.
Patsy Tarr is the founder and editor-in-chief of 2wice Editions and president of the
2wice Arts Foundation, a not-for-profit organization in New York City that supports
art, dance, film and performance through its publications, as well as through grants
and charitable gifts. She is a member of the board of directors of the Cunningham
Dance Foundation, Chez Bushwick, and the Central Park Conservancy.
Abbott Miller, designer and author, is a partner in the international design
consultancy Pentagram. He has been recognized for his book designs for leading
contemporary artists, his curatorial projects with museums, and his practice as an
innovative exhibition designer. His exhibition design for the Harley-Davidson Museum
in Milwaukee debuted in July 2008. A book of his projects and writings, Open Book:
Design and Content will be published in 2010.
