About the Residency:
The Bank of America Charitable Foundation is sponsoring a free residency for
low and moderate income dance students in Oakland in May. The residency,
conducted by Company C Contemporary Ballet, will feature two master classes
and choreography workshops for advanced pre-professional students followed
by a studio performance by Company C Contemporary Ballet at the end of the
residency week. The residency will be held at the Oakland School of the
Arts in downtown Oakland. The free performance will be open to workshop
attendees and their families and the students and staff of the Oakland
School of the Arts.
The master class and workshop, taught by Company C Contemporary Ballet’s
Artistic Director, Charles Anderson, is open to all advanced,
pre-professional students and will feature choreography from the Company’s
2009 repertoire. The class and workshop will take place on Monday, May 18
and Wednesday, May 20 from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Repertoire in the workshop may
include works by Twyla Tharp, San Francisco Ballet’s Val Caniparoli, Gregory
Dawson of Lines Ballet, Nikolai Kabaniaev (former co-Artistic Director of
Diablo Ballet), David Grenke professor of Dance at University of California,
Davis and Charles Anderson.
“I’m really excited about this residency,” said Artistic Director Charles
Anderson. “The only way to teach dance is by doing it. Most young dance
students never get the chance to do what we are offering here: the
opportunity to feel choreography on their own bodies and then see it
performed by a professional company. We’ve run similar choreography
workshops in Walnut Creek for the past two years and the students have
really had fun with it. I’m excited to be bringing this opportunity to
students in Oakland and hope that we can make this program part of our
annual educational outreach. ”
