Summer Season at Laban Theatre

Laban Theatre presents another season of diverse performance from established and
emerging dance and performance artists. Including Rajni Shah and Julia Bardsley,
part of the SPILL Festival of Performance 2009, the programme also features the
latest piece from Laban favourite Maresa Von Stockert/Tilted Productions, work by
Laban's Transitions Dance Company plus Laban degree students.

As part of the SPILL Festival - London's premiere festival of performance, live art
and experimental theatre - Laban hosts Rajni Shah's Dinner With America (April 6/7,
19.30hrs). This live art piece addresses the complexities of cultural identity in
the 21st century and challenges our concept of 'America'. Rajni Shah says: "I'm
fascinated by the notion that in this day and age everyone carries a small piece of
'America' inside them; a tiny concept or visual reference, often involuntary. And
I'm at once repulsed and delighted at just how easily I feel connected with those
ideas, which are often linked to capitalist ideals of freedom, desire,
individuality". As the performance space shifts and transforms, it gently uncovers
themes of consumerism, rights, ownership, voices, hope, harvest and division in this
visually compelling work.

Also part of SPILL Festival, on 13/14/17/18 April artist Julia Bardsley brings her
latest piece Aftermaths: A Tear in the Meat of Vision to Laban. Bardsley presents a
bacchanalian reading of Revelations, exploring notions of prophecy, excess,
capitalism and ecstasy. The final part of Bardsley's The Divine Trilogy, this dark
arena for ritual and rapture incorporates secreting surfaces, wounded landscapes,
curtains of skin and hair, mutating bodies, fragments of meat, murder and money.
Audience members are requested to wear black and become part of this congregation of
carnivalesque mourning. Come with a small black object (no bigger than 4cm) with
which you are willing to part and let the happy endings commence!

In June (1-2, 19.30hrs) Maresa Von Stockert/Tilted Productions return to Laban with
TrAPPED. In this atmospheric, moody and thought provoking dance theatre production
from award-winning choreographer Maresa von Stockert, five characters become caught
up in a nightmarishly impersonal, Kafkaesque world. Growing concerns of direct
communication and personal freedom in our surveillance-obsessed times inspire an
exceptional audiovisual experience that weaves striking choreography, original
music, spoken word and contemporary mime. Von Stockert has created a sharply
observed world of frustration and claustrophobia; scenes of absurd bureaucracy - "We
can help you but we can also be in your way" says a menacing petty official -
interplay with surreal humour; tender moments give way to sudden aggression;
Orwell's Big Brother is never far away...and no one knows who to trust.

Laban's Transitions Dance Company presents a mixed bill of gutsy new work by
choreographers Cristian Duarte, Daniel Larrieu and Cheng Tsung-Lung in May (6-8,
19.30hrs). The UK's first post-graduate dance company - bridging the gap between
training and professional dance practice - Transitions Dance Company celebrates 25
years of pushing the boundaries of contemporary dance. Each year the company
commissions new work from three outstanding choreographers and this year's programme
is a diverse mix of dance encompassing the provocative and the delicate, the ironic
and the heart-warming.

Emerging dance artists graduating from Laban's BA(hons) Dance Theatre programme
showcase their work (27 and 30 June, 2 July, 19.30hrs). This showcase is always an
eye-opener as tomorrow's big names in choreography and performance deliver an
eclectic programme of original work.
