Moderator of FAD Panel 2
Eva Dean, Artistic Director, Eva Dean Dance and Union Street Dance

Eva Dean is a prolific choreographer who has created more than forty dances over the
past 22 years. Throughout the years her choreography has received critical acclaim
and accolades from audiences, presenters and students. Dean is recognized as a
consummate professional who creates work that uses multiple elements to bring her
choreographic vision to life. Choreographic intent that embraces intuition is the
spring- board for Dean's creative process, and her unique movement is honed and
crafted while working with her dance company. The dancers- artistry and
improvisational skills are an integral part of the work. Boots, balls, rooftops, and
architectural design are specifically selected to enhance Dean's artistic vision.
Dean works closely with guest artists such as musicians, puppet masters, lighting,
set and costume designers to create a visually rich body of work. As a result her
lifetime body of work is diverse in scope, giving its audiences enduring memories.

Dean-s next collaboration is a three year project with Percussionist/Composer and
Environmentalist Donald Knaack (The Junkman-) www.junkmusic.org (

title for the Dean/Knaack collaboration is, Nat Res + Mo Na + Man which translates
to Natural Resources + Mother Nature + Man. All elements of this collaboration
(sound, movement, props, costumes and lighting) will be integrated into a pro-active
environmental exposé that explores the current state of the earth & natural
resources as well as the changes we can make to improve our environment.

Dean has set EDD repertoire on college and conservatory students, created new dances
for Brooklyn Public school students, and taught master choreography workshops as a
guest artist at many schools, including Hampshire College in Massachusetts,
Bennington College in Vermont, Hartford Conservatory Dance in Connecticut, Brooklyn
Public schools I.S. 259 (Bensonhurst) and P. S. 56 (Forte Green) and Alice
Teirstein's "Young Dancemakers" in New York City.

Dean is the Director and founder of Union Street Dance located in Park Slope
Brooklyn. Union Street Dance provides subsidized rehearsal space rental to over 120
dance companies annually and serves as the company's home. USD also provides a
Work-Study program, DTW Creative Residencies for Artists, a Guest Artist USD LAB,

Dean is an advocate for outreach within the New York City dance community. In years
past, she has served on numerous dance panels, and was a member of the Dance
Committee of the 92nd Street Y Harkness Dance Center and The Brooklyn Dance
Consortium. Currently, Ms. Dean is advocating that the New York City dance community
and City-wide presenters become more aware of what the needs are in family audiences
dance programming. Be part of the solution, pooling resources and investing in our

Panelists' Bios (Mary Rose Lloyd, Rita London)

Mary Rose Lloyd is the Director of Programming for The New Victory Theater, New
York-s first year-round theater for audiences of all ages. The New Victory is part
of the New 42nd Street Inc., which is charged with overseeing the redevelopment and
occupation of seven historic theaters on 42nd Street between 7th and 8th Avenues.
Mary is responsible for programming the 499-seat New Victory, a non-profit theater,
which presents national and international productions of music, dance, theater,
circus and puppetry for kids of all ages and their families. During her tenure,
several shows have won and/or been nominated for Tony, Obie and Drama Desk Awards in
New York.

Previously, Mary programmed the Special Events Series at the Yale Repertory Theater
and served as its Associate Managing Director. She was also a Programming Fellow at
the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) and the former Managing Director and a Board
member of Connecticut-s Ensemble Company for the Performing Arts. She has an MFA in
Theater Management from the Yale School of Drama where she received the Morris
Kaplan Award for Excellence in Arts Administration. Mary has served as a delegate to
the U.S./Netherlands/Flanders Touring and Exchange Project, and was a member of the
East Coast Advisory Board for the US COMEDY ARTS FESTIVAL. She is a former member of
the Board of Directors of both ASSITEJ/USA and the INTERNATIONAL PERFORMING ARTS FOR

Rita London has been developing cultural family programs and exhibitions for
children-s museums for over 20 years. As Director of Public Programs at the
Children-s Museum of Manhattan (CMOM), London curates an ongoing interactive
performance series which presents dance, music and theater to diverse families.
Often these performances are children-s first exposure to live quality
entertainment. London has a particular affinity to bringing dance to the public as
she studied dance as she was growing up. She began her career in television and film
production as a researcher for CBS cable, and associate producer for Livewire, a
Nickelodeon teen talk and variety show. Recently, in collaboration with CMOM, she
co-produced a documentary, New York Kids: A Subway Ride through Childhood that
explores the universal stress today's tweens experience in their daily lives.
Currently, she is independently co-producing a documentary Listening to Silence:
Chinese Women Speak, about how changing China is impacting women-s roles.

FAD discussion. The focus of the FAD Panel 2 is on what curators look for when
selecting choreography for their Arts Education and family audiences programming.
What exactly does it mean to have "age-appropriate" performances? You might think
that it all revolves around presenters avoiding choreographic content that has sex,
drugs and bad rock and roll. However, Renata Celichowska, Director, 92nd Streety Y
Harkness Dance Center's point of view is that "Children are more aesthetically savvy
than any adults ever recognize and can handle very sophisticated material and
concepts if the adults give them exposure and time." Learn more and perhaps be

Panelists' Bios (Peggy Peloquin, Marya Warshaw)

Peggy Peloquin, from Escanaba, MI, has been dancing in NYC since the late seventies.
Peloquin-s choreographic works are based in an exploration of the constructs of
communities and are rooted in the subtext of social issues. Her work has been
presented by Dance Theater Workshop, Danspace Project, Brooklyn Arts Exchange,
Movement Research at Judson Church, The Governors Institute for the Arts in Vermont,
and Dance & Co, in Virginia, among other venues. Her recent piece, Strategies
Stabilizing, was featured as part of Dance Theater Workshop-s Carnival Series. Her
critically acclaimed community based performance, Tender: The Nurses Project, was
created through her Artist in Residency with Dance Theater Workshop-s Public
Imaginations program, from 1997-2004. In 1998 she received a New York Dance and
Performance -Bessie- Award for her work with Red Dive, a group of independent
artists that produces site-specific, multi-sensory environments. She has also
received a 2000 A.I.R. from the Brooklyn Arts exchange, a 1996 Field-s Independent
Artists Challenge Grant, and a 1986 Meet the Composer grant with C. Hyams Hart. As a
dancer, some of the choreographers Peggy has worked with are; David Dorfman
(1987-95), Ralph Lemon, Martha Bowers, Jeff Bliss, the French Opera-s production of
Aty-s and a music video with XXY. Peloquin is a trained facilitator of NYFA-s
Leaders Circle program, a SEED leader, a founding member of the Dancers Forum, and

Since 1991, Marya Warshaw has been the Executive Director of BAX/Brooklyn Arts
Exchange (formerly The Gowanus Arts Exchange). She is responsible to the BAX Board
of Directors for creating and implementing programs, budgets, fundraising events,
short and long term and strategic planning. In this capacity she curates, directs
and manages BAX's performance season - over 50 performances each season. She has
created four successful Arts-in-Education programs in New York City public schools
K-12. She continues to serve as an active representative to the Gay and Lesbian
community of Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Borough President, Con Edison, NYC, and the
LAMBDA Independent Democrats among others have recognized her work in Brooklyn and
New York City through numerous awards and citations.

In 1998 BAX, under Ms. Warshaw's direction, received a "Bessie" Award for its
innovative work. She serves on adjudication panels for the New York City Department
of Cultural Affairs and the New York Foundation for the Arts. She acts as a
consultant in arts education as well as strategic planning for not-for-profit staff
and boards of directors in the arts.


Ms. Warshaw produced Fairytales (now known as Breathe) written by Dan Martin and
Michael Biello, developed through readings and workshops at BAX, which received a
full production in Provincetown, MA in July 1997. With her partner Jane-Cole
Raftery, she co-produced Peggy Shaw's Menopausal Gentleman, premiered by Dixon Place
and Ellie Covan at the Ohio Theater, NYC, in Provincetown, MA in July/August 1999.

Ms. Warshaw attended Bard College on a full Performing Arts Scholarship and has done
graduate work in Arts Management at New York University, Gallatin Division. She is
the mother of two sons and is a long-time Park Slope resident. www.bax.org (
