25th Anniversary Season
Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana
Will Present
A New Work Based On The Timeless Story of Carmen
"Carmen: El Baile"
Along with the Traditional "Estilos Flamencos"
At The Joyce Theater Opening March 4th 2008

Intense speed, sensual partnering, and stiletto movement are the trademarks
of the nationally recognized Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana company, which
will celebrate its 25th Anniversary season when the company returns to The
Joyce Theater (175 Eighth Avenue) on Tuesday, March 4th with the New York
premiere of "Carmen: El Baile," ("Carmen: The Dance") a fresh, cutting edge
take on one of the world's most seductive women and the new work "Estilos
Flamenco," a traditional celebration of the elegance and passion of
Flamenco. Featuring nine dancers and five musicians, the company continues
its dual mission of re-inventing the boundaries of contemporary Flamenco as
well retaining a respect for the customs of the art form. The company will
perform for its eighth consecutive Joyce season, Tuesday, March 4th through
Sunday, March 9th.

As a special highlight for its anniversary season, the company has created
"Carmen: El Baile" ("Carmen: The Dance") inspired by the legend of Carmen.
The 50-minute dance/drama will paint the timeless diva as a self-empowered
woman and a symbol of artistic perfection, strength and creativity ---
revealing that her drive to achieve artistic perfection can both create and
destroy. Fusing the powerful rhythm of Flamenco choreography with original
music and a dramatic script, Pilar Andujar, the highly praised young
choreographer from Spain, has joined forces with theatre director, Rafael
Lopez-Barrantes. Lopez-Barrantes, a former faculty member at Duke University
and presently working at CalArts, will supply conceptual framework and
staging. Composer Calvin Hazen has penned a score which will combine
traditional Flamenco with strains of Bizet and contemporary music.

"Estilos Flamencos" will conclude the program with a series of duets, solos
and group works allowing the artists to freely perform in a highly charged
competitive atmosphere. Through stunning footwork and precision technique,
each dancer will showcase their own personal style as well as their
individuality as an artist.

Founded in 1983, Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana's mission is to foster the
art form of Flamenco and Hispanic culture through the creation of
cutting-edge new works. Featuring artists from Spain as well as the US, this
international company embraces Ms. Santana's goal of nurturing young artists
as well as educating young generations in the arts to help them develop,
grown and evolve. The company continues to pioneer in-depth works focused on
varied facets of Spanish/Hispanic culture.

Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana is supported by American Express Bank; The
Harkness Foundation for Dance; The Merrill G. and Emita E. Hastings
Foundation; The Lila Acheson Wallace Theater Fund; The JPMorgan Chase
Foundation; The New York City Department of Cultural Affairs; The New York
State Council on the Arts; The Office of the Manhattan Borough President;
Target Stores; Tourist Office of Spain; The Friar's Club; American Music
Center Live Music for Dance Program and WNYC NY Public Radio and The U.S.
Department of Education., NYC Department of Youth and Community Development,
Con Edison and The National Endowment for The Arts

"Carmen: El Baile" has been commissioned by The Joyce Theater's Stephen and
Cathy Weinroth Fund for New Work.

The performance schedule in New York, at The Joyce Theater (175 Eighth
Avenue at 19th Street) is: Tuesday and Wednesday at 7:30 Thursday, Friday
and Saturday at 8:00; Sunday at 7:30 with matinee performances on Saturday
