PACIFIC NORTHWEST BALLET OPENS 2006-2007 SEASON WITH







A collection of bold, exceptional works by master choreographers - featuring the
Seattle premiere of

Jerome Robbins' Fancy Free, plus the return of William Forsythe's In the middle,
somewhat elevated,

and George Balanchine's Theme and Variations



September 21 - October 1 at McCaw Hall



SEATTLE, WA - Pacific Northwest Ballet opens its 2006-2007 Season with Artistic
Director Peter Boal's selections for DIRECTOR'S CHOICE, a vibrant mixed repertory
program featuring the Seattle premiere of Fancy Free, the delightful 1944 Jerome
Robbins/Leonard Bernstein collaboration, plus the return of William Forsythe's
riveting In the middle, somewhat elevated, set to Thom Willems' explosive electronic
score, and Theme and Variations, George Balanchine's beautiful tour de force,
choreographed to music by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, September 21 - October 1 at
McCaw Hall.



On Saturday, September 16, Pacific Northwest Ballet is "rolling out the red carpet"
for PACIFIC NORTHWEST BALLET'S 2006 OPENING GALA featuring a special presentation of
Robert Joffrey's Remembrances with a guest appearance by soprano Jane Eaglen,
singing Wagner's "Träume" and accompanied by the Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra.
The evening continues with the Seattle premiere of Jerome Robbins' Circus Polka,
George Balanchine's Theme and Variations, Paul Gibson's World Premiere along with
excerpts from Kent Stowell's Swan Lake and Balanchine's La Sonnambula.



After the performance, PNB invites the community to enjoy an enticing array of
dining options and an on-stage dance party, complete with live music and PNB
dancers. Come celebrate with PNB as we "paint the town red" and Peter Boal announces
the promotions of new Principal dancers.



Pacific Northwest Ballet's 2006 Opening Gala is Saturday, September 16 at McCaw
Hall. Cocktails will be served at 5:00 p.m. (for dinner attendees), doors open at
5:30 p.m. and the performance begins at 6:30 p.m. The event is Black Tie. Tickets
are priced at $55 and $75 and include a champagne reception at intermission.
Performance tickets paired with a post-performance party and supper range from $120

season, but similarities stop there. Contrast Jerome Robbins' In the Night with
Fancy Free, or George Balanchine's Symphony in Three Movements with Theme and
Variations. Forsythe's choice of composer could not be more disparate from Bach in
Artifact II to Willems for In the middle, somewhat elevated. Such contrasts
highlight the uncanny range of these choreographers' abilities. The sum total of
these three works makes for a perfect program and a perfect beginning to an

Jerome Robbins' Fancy Free ~ PNB Premiere!

When Jerome Robbins' first ballet, Fancy Free, premiered in New York on April 18,
1944, it proved to be one of the most exciting evenings in the history of ballet in
America, marking the emergence of three new American talents: choreographer Jerome
Robbins, composer Leonard Bernstein, and designer Oliver Smith.

An instant hit, the ballet was transformed that same year into the equally
successful Broadway musical On the Town and established Robbins and Bernstein as
formidable talents in American theater. Robbins danced in the Fancy Free premiere
with Janet Reed, one of American ballet's favorite soubrettes, who went on to join
New York City Ballet and later became Founding Director of Pacific Northwest Ballet
School.

Robbins collaborated again with Bernstein on West Side Story and served as
choreographer for thirteen Broadway shows - most notably On the Town, The King and
I, Peter Pan, Gypsy, and Fiddler on the Roof. His Broadway activities alternated
with the creation of over 60 ballets, including In the Night (part of last year's
Director's Choice program), Interplay, The Guests, Age of Anxiety, and The Cage. In
1949 Robbins moved to New York City Ballet, where he became Associate Artistic
Director with George Balanchine and later Ballet-Master-in-Chief with Peter Martins.



Set in New York City on a summer night, Fancy Free follows three sailors on shore
leave as they look for romance. When they succeed in picking up only two girls, the
sailors begin to fight over them. They try to resolve the situation by dancing for
the girls one after another, to give the girls a chance to decide among them.
Robbins uses these solos as a means of illuminating the sailors' characters.
Lighthearted but with a somber undercurrent, set against the backdrop of World War
II, Fancy Free is classical ballet with a distinct American accent. "What Fancy Free
did most impressively was to integrate classical and colloquial dances within a
context of carefully observed characters," explains dance critic Marcia Siegel.
"Robbins achieved it for the first time in a contemporary ballet. He gave gesture
and the acting of real people the same validity on the concert stage that Fred
Astaire gave to dancing in the quasi-realistic milieu of movie romances."



PNB's premiere production of Fancy Free will be staged by former New York City
Ballet principal dancer and current Robbins Trust repetiteur Judith Fugate and
features Dee Dee Bridgewater's recording of "Big Stuff."



William Forsythe's In the middle, somewhat elevated

American-born choreographer William Forsythe has been called "one of history's
landmark choreographers." He has made his career primarily in Europe, especially
Germany, where he was director of Ballett Frankfurt for many years before founding
and directing the Forsythe Company. His athletic choreography is a union of
classical ballet and modern dance - a bold regeneration of the academic dance
vocabulary.



Commissioned by Rudolf Nureyev in 1987 for the Paris Opera Ballet, Forsythe's
groundbreaking work, In the middle, somewhat elevated, was recognized immediately as
a contemporary masterpiece and has since entered the repertories of many major
companies around the world. The faux disdain of the dancers (three men and six
women), moving in pairs and groupings, contrasts with the strict and severe
technical demands of the choreography, while the electronic score by young Dutchman
Thom Willems cuts the air like thunder. As for the title of the ballet, look for two
golden cherries hanging "in the middle, somewhat elevated" - a minimal reflection of
the vast interior of the Palais Garnier, home of the Paris Opera Ballet.



"In the middle, somewhat elevated is a theme and variations in the strictest sense.
Exploiting the vestiges of academic virtuosity that still signify 'the Classical,'
it extends and accelerates these traditional figures of ballet," explains Forsythe.
"By shifting the alignment and emphasis of essentially vertical transitions, the
affected enchainments receive an unexpected force and drive that makes them appear
foreign to their own origins."



In the middle, somewhat elevated was first performed at PNB in 2000 in its Seattle
premiere; at the time, Seattle Times dance critic Mary Murfin Bayley wrote that the
performance "provided one of those rare theatrical occasions when a performance
seems to flare across the stage, made up of some elemental energy rather than a
series of rehearsed steps."



Audiences can look forward to a work of fierce beauty; in the words of New York
Times critic John Rockwell, "The way Mr. Forsythe takes ballet technique and then
twists and contorts and pushes it into seemingly impossible extensions is a marvel."

Comments dance critic Martha West, "In the middle isn't ballet for Miss Manners:
It's rough and rude and wildly energetic, full of flexed feet, angular port de bras
and other fractures of classical line, an epiphany of physicality that stretches the
classical vocabulary to the breaking point."



George Balanchine's Theme and Variations

"In addition to his ballet scores, Tchaikovsky composed a great deal of music ideal
for dancing. This was perhaps natural for a man who had discovered in ballet a
genuine inspiration. Between the time of his first ballet, Swan Lake (1877), and his
second, The Sleeping Beauty (1890), Tchaikovsky wrote four orchestral suites. They
were not composed for dancing, yet to listen to them is to think immediately of
dancing. Theme and Variations is arranged to the final movement of the Suite No. 3
in G major. This is a dance ballet; like Ballet Imperial, it evokes that great
period in classical dancing when Russian ballet flourished with the aid of
Tchaikovsky's music." -George Balanchine



Theme and Variations comes from that incredibly fertile era for George Balanchine
that was the 1940s-the period that gave us Ballet Imperial, Concerto Barocco, The
Four Temperaments, Orpheus, La Sonnambula (PNB premiere performance in March 2007),
Symphony in C, the founding of New York City Ballet, and a host of Broadway musicals
and Hollywood films for which Balanchine created dances.



While Theme and Variations majestically recalls the classicism of The Sleeping
Beauty, it also pushes ballet forward with Balanchine's neo-classical sensibilities,
emphasizing speed, attack, musicality, and breadth of movement. A tour de force for
its entire cast, Theme and Variations was singled out by Mikhail Baryshnikov as the
most difficult ballet he ever danced.



PNB's production of Theme and Variations is staged by PNB Founding Artistic Director
Francia Russell. In 1988, Ms. Russell traveled to Leningrad (now St. Petersburg),
Russia, to stage Theme and Variations for the Kirov Ballet-the first au­thorized
Russian performance of a Balanchine ballet-on the stage of the Maryinsky Theatre,
where Balanchine himself first performed as a student of the Imperial Ballet School.




Theme and Variations enjoyed a successful PNB premiere in 1985 and was last
performed by the Company in February 2003.

PNB projects

PNB Board of Trustee member, Glenn Kawasaki has made a gift to PNB of $1.1 million
in support of the company's New Works Initiative and Choreographer's Showcase for
fiscal years 2007 through 2011.



Mr. Kawasaki's support for the New Works Initiative, totaling $1 million, is in the
form of five $100,000 gifts each fiscal year along with $500,000 in support for a
new full length ballet. The remaining $100,000 gift for Choreographer's Showcase is
at the rate of $20,000 per fiscal year.



Pacific Northwest Ballet is grateful for this exceptional gift and tremendous level
of commitment to the artistic vision of Peter Boal and the future of Pacific
Northwest Ballet.

About Pacific Northwest Ballet

Pacific Northwest Ballet, one of the largest and most highly regarded ballet
companies in the United States, was founded in 1972. On July 1, 2005, Peter Boal
assumed the role of Artistic Director, succeeding Kent Stowell and Francia Russell,
