Date and Time:
Fall Semester Only
10 Thursdays, 6 - 7:30 p.m. Begins September 14 - December 14.
Basing the lectures on performance schedules for the current season at
important dance venues around town, The Artistry of Dance is an active and
up-to-date course, offering insights into the aesthetics of choreographers who
move the dance world. Before class attendance at an event, choreographer
Henning Rübsam will introduce each program, as well as the choreographer's and
composer's common history. In-class discussions the week following a
presentation allow members of the class to be first-time critics. Students
will enhance their enjoyment of dance by learning how to "watch better," to
appreciate how a piece is put together, and to recognize choreographic
characteristics of different periods and different schools. The course will
shed light on the collaborative process between choreographer and composer and
offers, in one semester, a general dance history and easy-to-understand
explanations of those mysterious ballet terms. Frequent use of video
recordings, in-class discussions, and occasional guests (including Prima
Ballerina Assoluta Eva Evdokimova) will add to your enjoyment, whether you're
a novice or longtime dance-goer.
