MARIANA BEKERMAN DANCE COMPANY IN THE PREMIERE OF 'TARO' AT JOYCE SOHO,
GUEST CHOREOGRAPHERS: KEIKO FUJII AND REBEKAH J. KENNEDY
Thursday-Sunday, September 21-24, 8 PM
Joyce SoHo, 155 Mercer Street
Tickets: $15; $10 for students & seniors
Mariana Bekerman Dance Company presents her new "Taro," with segments by
guest choreographers Keiko Fujii, director of the Keiko Fujii Dance Company of
Osaka, Japan, and Rebekah J. Kennedy, Artistic Director of the Urban Wash Dance
Company, September 21-24 at Joyce SoHo.
The work centers around a woman who loses her way and struggles to regain a
positive and normal state. Different dancers portray the woman in the various
stages of her journey to recovery. Following a recent preview excerpt of
"Taro," Robert Johnson noted that "Mariana Bekerman's sustained and fluid lines
wonderfully echoed the movement of the waves in the river behind her during
the lyrical solo that opened her "Taro.' In the wake of a passing ship, the
swell rose and curled fortuitously at just the right moment." (Star-Ledger,
August 10, 2006)
Mariana Bekerman was born in Odessa Russia and emigrated with her family to
New York while still a child. A graduate of LaGuardia High School and NYU's
Tisch School of the Arts, Mariana was drawn to choreographing very early.
Never one to say no to an opportunity, the adventurous young dancemaker has
choreographed for clubs, Off-off Broadway plays, resorts, and the concert stage.
Her energetic fresh vision incoporates ballet and modern, with references to
hip-hop and break dancing.
