Dear Member of the Press:
You and your guest are cordially invited to an exciting event: A Legacy
in Tradition: Kang Sun Young Dance Company making their NYC debut with a
special performance at the New York State Theatre - Lincoln Center
(Broadway & 63rd Street), next Tuesday, August 8th at 7:30 pm. This is
a company of 60 members plus a 14 piece traditional Korean orchestra.
At the age of 12, over seventy years ago, Kang Sun Young began her
lessons from Dance Master, Han Seong Jun (1874-1942). He would later be
known as a pioneer in Korean traditional dance; establishing in 1930,
the first Korean dance academy, to preserve traditional Korean music and
dances including the "Crane Dance" and "Tae Pyung Mu." Today, Kang Sun
Young, is known as the sole successor to his dances and actively
preserves traditional Korean dance. She established the Kang Sun Young
Traditional Dance Institute in 1951. In 1962, she began her 20 years as
the national choreographer for the Korean National Dance Company at the
National Theater. Kang has faithfully preserved the traditional dances
taught to her and also created original masterpieces.
The Kang Sun Young Dance Company, including Kang herself (possibly her last time on
stage) will perform the treasured traditional dances that she has devoted her life
to preserve including dances that she also created which are now traditional in
Korean dance repertory. On stage will be four generations, Master Han Seong Jun's
dances, Kang Sun Young, her students and her students' students performing a Legacy
in Tradition. The engagement is presented by: The Ministry of Culture and Tourism
Republic of Korea; The Cultural Heritage Administration; City of Anseong; Korea
National Tourism Organization; Korea Central Daily News; Korean Cultural Service New
York; The Korean American Association of Greater NY; The Korean American Association
of Greater NJ; The Tae Pyung Mu Initiation Academy; and The Kang Sun Young Arts
Organization.
