Returns Triumphantly to Harbourfront Centre!

The ASHKENAZ FESTIVAL is pleased to announce that
a bountiful outpouring of music, theatre, art,
dance, literature, cabaret and film will take
place at Harbourfront Centre, from August 31
through September 4, 2006.

Colourful events like the pageant and parade
organized by the award-winning Shadowland
Theatre, Kaballistic yoga and dramatic Havdallah
rituals ushering in the weekend, evoke the
special nature of the festival which combines the
traditional spirit of Eastern Europe with the new
radical art being created in a contemporary
resurgence of Jewish culture. Through
commissioned musical compositions and
performances, theatrical premieres,
collaborations between choreographers and
musicians, silent film classics accompanied live
by klezmer groups, and special presentations of
graphic novels along with book and CD launches,
the festival offers a cornucopia of exhilarating

Fitting snugly into Harbourfront Centre's annual
themes, ASHKENAZ illuminates the power of place
offered in Canada for Jewish culture in the
Diaspora through a powerful line-up of artistic
'world route' events bound to entrance
multicultural Toronto.

Kicking off ASHKENAZ at Harbourfront Centre is
RETRO ASHKENAZ. The best of the fest is
celebrated on stage with the return of past
faves, klezmer superstars Les Yeux Noirs and
Klezmer en Buenos Aires for ONE performance only!
Book your tickets now by calling 416.973.4000!

Les Yeux Noirs, French for The Black Eyes, takes
their name from the title of a Russian gypsy tune
made famous by Django Reinhardt in the '30s. Part
gypsy, part klezmer with a nod to Manouche, the
music of Les Yeux Noirs is a lively fusion of
musical styles that have moved people to sing and
dance around the world for centuries. Led by a
pair of virtuosic, violin-wielding brothers, Eric
and Olivier Slabiak, theirs is a sound that
ignores the divisions of political maps, sneaks
past border patrols and extends across the
Diaspora. A song starts slowly, moodily, merging
new melodies and manic rhythms until the music
snaps, losing all control. A bona fide festival
hit, Les Yeux Noirs appeared as the rockin'
closing act of ASHKENAZ in 2004 and returned for
a sold-out gala concert in January 2006.

The world-class Argentinean duo César Lerner and
Marcelo Moguilevsky of Klezmer en Buenos Aires
bring the joy and pathos of Eastern Europe's most
spirited music to life by seamlessly blending
klezmer with elements of Argentinean folk music,
jazz, and tango. Drawing inspiration from their
Jewish heritage, the band is also decidly South
American -- the unmistakable sounds of Latin
America ever present as the Moguilevsky's
clarinet wails and Lerner's piano weeps. Lerner
and Moguilevsky, who have been staples at the
last four ASHKENAZ Festivals, will deliver
another highly personal performance, brimming
with wild harmonies, exciting improvisation, and
lightning-fast playing. Thursday, August 31,
Harbourfront Centre Concert Stage, 8pm - $25

ASHKENAZ is elated to bring the LufTeater theatre
company from Strasbourg, France and artistic
director and former ASHKENAZ performer Rafael
Goldwaser with Echoes and Shavings of
Yiddishland. The remarkable cast of six summons
the world of Yiddish Krakow, a city that lives
under the haze of industrialization; where
mothers rock their children to sleep, where
lovers don't have a penny to share, and where
thieves and prostitutes light up the night.
Performed in Yiddish and French with English
surtitles. Thursday, August 31 @ 6pm (Preview),
Saturday September 2 @ 7pm, Sunday, September 3,
@ 1pm, Harbourfront Centre Theatre - $18

ASHKENAZ is thrilled to present a specially
commissioned new work from trumpeter and ASHKENAZ
Festival founder David Buchbinder and Juno
Award-winning pianist and composer Hilario Durán.
The Klezmer Cuban Connection: David Buchbinder
and Hilario Durán features new musical fusions of
Bulgar and Bembé, Sher and Son Montuno, Hora and
Saturday, September 2, Harbourfront Centre Theatre, 10pm - $18

"I want to make original klezmer music that's
drunk, dirty, political and passionate."
From Vancouver, ASHKENAZ welcomes
singer-songwriter Geoff Berner whose 2005 release
of Whiskey Rabbi garnered critical acclaim and a
cult following for its unique style of punk
klezmer. Saturday September 2, Brigantine Room
at Harbourfront Centre, 11pm - $12

91-year old Lounge King Irving Fields meets
78-year old King of Rai, Maurice El Médioni, in a
once-in-a-lifetime concert featuring two
awe-inspiring keyboard legends. The story and
music of pianist Maurice El Médioni is a mix of
Jewish and Arab roots and French and Algerian
identity. Irving Fields mixes classic American
popular music with Latin beats. A lively
cocktail of Cuban rhythms, French cabaret chic
and Middle Eastern sounds will rekindle the
cosmopolitan atmospheres of these illustrious
musicians' past. Sunday, September 3,
Harbourfront Centre Theatre, 5pm - $25

Rabbi Itzchak Marmorstein will lead a special
Ophanim yoga class, a recently emerged
Kabbalistic yoga that helps people flow in
harmony with their inner Tree of Life. Saturday,
September 2 @ 2pm, Sunday, September 3rd @ 1pm,
Monday September 4th @ 2pm Ann Tindal Lawn - FREE

"Oy Moshe, my tuchas is killing me, I think I
pulled a muscle at Kabbalah Yoga."

as easy as one may think. Michael Wex, author of
Born to Kvetch, can teach you how to kvetch like
a pro in his lecture Kvetch with Wex.
Monday, September 4, Brigantine Room, 1pm - $10

which prepares the soul for the work of life, the
