BACKGROUND
In 1611 Shakespeare was a mature artist at 47, financially comfortable, and
artistically free to speak his mind – at least in matters non-political in nature.
That year he wrote The Winter’s Tale, a play that shifts tone by the moment, for
the agile and willing spectator to savor its delights. The narrative, with its
storms, man-eating bears, and statues that come to life is amongst the most
fantastical in all literature. The play's first known performance occurred at the
Globe Theatre in London, on May 15, 1611. Harold Bloom in his Shakespeare and The
Invention of the Human calls The Winter’s Tale a work that “surges with
Shakespeare’s full power…” and “…one of his richest plays.”
Written 13 years earlier than the other, Much Ado About Nothing contrasts with The
Winter’s Tale the way summer differs from winter. In this comedy of mistaken
identities and equivocations, Shakespeare gives us some of his most unforgettable
supporting characters: Hero, Claudio, Leonato, Don John, Borachio, Don Pedro, and
Margaret.
“New Theatre's annual summer celebration of the bard... a significant
contribution to South Florida's theatrical landscape...”
Christine Dolen, Miami Herald
