EIGHT YOUNG PERFORMING ARTISTS WIN $10,000 GRANTS





OTTAWA, July 17, 2006 - The Hnatyshyn Foundation has chosen eight young performing
artists who will each receive a grant of $10,000 to pursue their studies in
September 2006. The winners of the 2006 Developing Artists Grants competition were
announced in Ottawa today by Gerda Hnatyshyn, C.C., President and Chair of the Board
of The Hnatyshyn Foundation. The grant winners were adjudicated anonymously by
expert juries from among applicants nominated by educational and training
institutions across Canada.



The classical piano grant will be awarded to 17-year-old Rosy Yuxuan Ge of Edmonton.
Originally from Shandong, China, Rosy recently graduated from Harry Ainlay High
School in Edmonton and will be undertaking a Bachelor of Music degree at the
University of Alberta this fall.



Paul Medeiros of Bedford, Nova Scotia, will receive the classical music grant for
orchestral instrument. The 18-year-old violinist has just graduated from Charles P.
Allen High School and will be starting a Bachelor of Music degree in violin
performance at Dalhousie University in Halifax.



The winner of the Oscar Peterson Grant for Jazz Performance is Carl Bray of Regina,
Saskatchewan, an 18-year-old pianist who just completed grade 12 at Campbell
Collegiate. He will use his grant to study jazz performance at Humber School of
Creative and Performing Arts in Toronto.



The classical ballet grant goes to 19-year-old Kostyantyn Keshyshev of Vancouver who
will be undertaking the full-time professional program offered by the Goh Ballet
Academy. He studied at the Odessa Ballet Academy in Ukraine before immigrating to
Canada and has been training at the Goh Academy for the past three years.



The winner for contemporary dance is 23-year-old Lisa Hering of Calgary. A former
student at the West Edmonton Ballet Academy and Vancouver's Arts Umbrella, Lisa
spent a year performing with dance companies in Israel. She has just completed her
first year of the B.A. Contemporary Dance Program at the University of Calgary.



Luke Camilleri, aged 22, of Courtney, B.C., is the winner of the Developing Artist
Grant for English theatre acting. A graduate of Georges P. Vanier Secondary School
on Vancouver Island, he will be starting his second year of drama studies at Studio
58, the Theatre Arts Program of Langara College, in Vancouver.



The French theatre acting grant will go to Audray Demers of Candiac, Quebec, who
will turn 18 in August. Audray received her high school education at the Collège
Durocher in Saint-Lambert and has just finished her first year of the Option-Théâtre
professional theatre program at Collège Lionel-Groulx in Saint-Thérèse.



The graduate grant for classical vocal performance will be awarded to 30-year-old
soprano Lambroula Maria Pappas of Vancouver who will continue her training at the
Vancouver Academy of Music with voice teacher David Meek. Ms. Pappas has a Master of
Music degree in Opera from the University of British Columbia.



The Hnatyshyn Foundation is a private charity established by the late Right
Honourable Ramon John Hnatyshyn, Canada's twenty-fourth Governor General. Its
programs are funded by donations from government, foundations, corporations and
individuals. The Department of Canadian Heritage matches donations received by the
Foundation up to a maximum of $2.5 million.
