TheYard, Martha’s Vineyard colony for performing artists, presents YARD ARTS! A Festival of Dance, Theater Music and Film opening Monday July 24 and closing Saturday August 12. Eclectic programming, distinguished returning alumni and island partnerships are featured in the slate of events. Venues include The Yard in Chilmark, The Martha’s Vineyard Museum in Edgartown and Union Chapel in Oak Bluffs. Day-time and evening events run from family fun to sophisticated dance, theater and performance. Prices range from free, general seating from $15 to $25 dollars, and special benefit performances from $50 to $100. For all events, The Yard offers a limited number of lower priced Under 30 tickets.

Known for its thirty-five year legacy of choreographic residencies, The Yard debuts YARD ARTS! to compliment its regular season offerings. Dance highlights include opening night’s Comedy & Classics, a shared concert with soloists from the José Limón Dance Company in The Moor’s Pavane partnered with a sampling of witty performance pieces by island favorite Built on Stilts founder Abby Bender. The Festival’s second week begins with Margie Gillis and Paola Styron showing a first-look of work-in-progress a stone’s poem. Yard alumni Susan Marshall, David Dorfman, Rebecca Lazier and Jody Oberfelder return for a very special shared concert, running for the final three nights of the festival. Yvonne Marceau, of American Ballroom’s Theater Mad Hot Ballroom, hosts a Family Dance Party: Learn a Little, Boogie A Lot.

Theater, music, poetry and comedy fill out the Festival roster. NYC comic Reno brings The god Show. Staceyann Chin of Def Jam Poetry performs her own work in Border/Clash. Popular island artist Niki Patton brings I Hear Voices to The Yard, her autobiographical monologue. The Whale (a one man Moby Dick) of NYC’s Concrete Temple Theater performs a two-night show. Island favorites Jon Lipsky and Stan Strickland preview their autojazzography Coming Up for Air in a pre-Boston run. Island partners include Built on Stilts, Featherstone Center for the Arts, Martha’s Vineyard Museum (Historical Society), Martha’s Vineyard Independent Film Festival, Marla Blakey’s All That Jazz and Guest Producer Monina von Opel. Yard Managing Director & Curator for Special Projects Wendy Taucher says “The Festival is a celebration of the imagination, a gathering of communities and an opportunity for audiences to see old favorites as well as the chance to try something new. We’re honored and thrilled to be hosting this terrific group of artists.”

One of the nation’s only artist colonies devoted exclusively to the art of choreography, The Yard supports the creation of new work by providing choreographers and dancers with housing, stipends, rehearsal space, public performance opportunities, artistic guidance when needed, and the greatest luxury of all: uninterrupted time to explore and experiment. Since the institution’s founding by Patricia N. Nanon in 1973, nearly 200 dance works have been created and premiered at The Yard, and more than 500 performing artists - representing a vital cross-section of contemporary dance - have been supported and encouraged by residencies at the colony. In addition to residencies, programs of The Yard include the Artist-in-the-Schools program, the Multicultural Workshop program, community classes and performances. The Yard is supported in part by the National Endowment for The Arts, Massachusetts Cultural Council, Martha’s Vineyard Cultural Council, The Jerome A. and Estelle R. Newman Assistance Fund, The Harkness Foundation for Dance, Capezio/Ballet, and individual contributors. The Yard is a member of the Alliance of Artists Communities.
