Miami Art Central
SummerFest 2006 Programs and Events
July Schedule

SummerFest 2006

Aiming to initiate understanding dialogue about important questions related to
contemporary art and society, Miami Art Central has organized several Public
Programs which address the central themes of Snap Judgments: New Positions in
Contemporary African Photography, within a larger dialogue of culture, history and
related art forms.

FILM

AFRICA IN MOTION

Organized by the African Film Festival, Inc. (AFF) in New York, AFRICA IN MOTION
is a special six-evening series of recent African cinema. Continuing AFF’s ongoing
objective to present a spectrum of innovative works by African artists, each
evening will feature films by some of Africa’s most notable filmmakers, with
special focus on the distinct aesthetics of the African camera. Feature- and
short-length films of filmmakers from countries including Ethiopia, Angola, South
Africa, Nigeria, Senegal, and Morocco will reveal not only the experimental and
creative elements of classic and contemporary African cinema, but also the ways in
which Africa’s visual culture is used to represent the continent’s ever-changing
cultural landscape.

Friday, July 14, 8:00 pm: BLOOD IS NOT FRESH WATER
Directed by Theo Eshetu, Ethiopia/United Kingdom/Italy, 1998, 56 minutes

CONCERTS

Come to Miami Art Central to hear a variety of live performances.

Saturday, July 15, 8:00 pm: Aina Candela

Aina Candela is the creation of world renowned Afro-Cuban artist Philbert
Armenteros. The group’s music is best described as a fusion of Afro-Cuban
folklore with elements of Timba and Funk. By melding modern instrumentation to the
traditional drums of African Yoruba culture, Aina Candela ushers in a new era of
world music.

Saturday, July 22, 8:00 pm: Defonc’e

DeFonc'e is a groove-oriented production designed by a few unique individuals,
with a wide variety of approaches to life and music. The group includes musicians
from Colombia, Portugal, Senegal, New York, Cuba and other parts of the world,
collaborating in Reggae, Funk, R&B, Jazz, Rock, Latin, and Afro-Cuban musical
styles.

CONVERSATIONS

Miami Art Central invites specialists from various creative and academic
disciplines to discuss the current exhibitions as well as inter-related topics.

Thursday, July 27, 8:00 pm: Gallery Talk with Vanessa Rocco, Assistant Curator,
International Center of Photography, New York

Vanessa Rocco will give an insightful guided tour of the exhibition within the
museum galleries. A contributing author to the Snap Judgments exhibition
catalogue, Rocco worked closely with curator Okwui Enwezor, coordinating all
aspects of the exhibition. In 2004 she co-curated Looking at LIFE with Carol
Squiers at the ICP. Her exhibition, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy's Experiments of the
1920s, which originated at the ICP, traveled to George Eastman House (Rochester,
NY) in 2005. She is co-editor of the catalogue Modernist Photography: Selections
from the Daniel Cowin Collection with curator Christopher Phillips.

On the Second Sunday afternoon of each month throughout the Summer exhibition
season, MAC offers family tours and workshops to encourage parents and their
children to visit the museum together. Family Activity Guides are designed and

Shakespeare's classic. The show will be presented for four
performances at the Roxy Performing Arts Center, Theatre 4 in

University Park Campus. Showtimes are 8:00pm Thursday through
Saturday, and 2:00pm on Sunday. Tickets are $12.00 for General

to their employers. This exhilarating approach to Shakespeare's best
loved comedy is filled with magic and charm and is guaranteed to
offer a perfect midsummer night at the theatre for all the family!

HER GRACE
The Duchess Of Windsor Story
by
RICHARD JANARO

With: Bruce Linser, Lisa Morgan, and Angie Radosh

The 80-year old Duchess, once known as Wallis Warfield Simpson, a
twice-divorced American woman who almost became Queen of England, is
now alone in the world; but on a rainy afternoon in her suite at the
Waldorf-Astoria, her mind wanders back and forth in time. And so
unfolds the story of a woman who rose from poverty to become the
most famous (and, for some people, infamous) female in the Western
world. It is still debated whether Wallis was a ruthless social-
climber or a lonely woman searching always for a deep and lasting
love. The play examines both sides of the issue.

GableStage is located at The Biltmore Hotel, 1200 Anastasia Avenue,
Coral Gables, FL 33134. Parking is on the West Side of the Hotel,
the theatre is located in the East wing.
