for the arts & cultural community. Membership has grown to over 1,500 members.

All done with no funding, no grant money, no membership fees, and no advertising rates.

Just a LOT of work, and a Jurrassic computer.

Pre-charged Starbuck's Cards gleefully accepted.

Current Exhibitions
THE BASS MUSEUM CELEBRATES THE HAITIAN SPIRIT
The Bass Museum celebrates THE HAITIAN SPIRIT with a two-month
celebration of Haitian heritage that continues through July 23,
2006. Three Haitian Spirit exhibitions and related programs,
organized by the Bass Museum, were created to foster awareness of
the Haitian cultural contribution to our community. The Bass Museum
is offering free admission to Miami Beach residents and all
participating Haitian organizations during the course of the
celebration.

ALLEGORIES OF HAITIAN LIFE FROM THE COLLECTION OF JONATHAN DEMME
Through July 23, 2006 (Gertrude Silverstone Muss Gallery)
Guest curators Axelle Liautaud of Haiti and Candice Russell of South
Florida have selected 80 choice artworks by Haiti's best painters
including Hector Hyppolite, Wilson Bigaud, Andre Pierre, Riguad
Benoit and other self-taught masters like pioneer sculptor Georges
Liautaud. Demme, the Academy Award winning film director of "The
Silence of the Lambs" and "Philadelphia" began collecting Haitian
art in the mid-1980s. This exhibition showcases his treasured art
possessions and offers a unique opportunity for museum visitors.
Realistic and supernatural aspects of Haitian life, including Vodou,
are visually documented in a way that celebrates the strength of the
Haitian spirit. A color 88-page catalogue is available for purchase.

EDOUARD DUVAL-CARRIE:THE VODOU PANTHEON
Through July 23, 2006 (Gertrude Silverstone Muss Gallery)
The Vodou Pantheon is a mixed media installation that is comprised
of seminal paintings that are part of the Bass Museum of Art's
permanent collection. This mixed media installation, on view for the
first time in Miami, showcases both historical and contemporary
interpretations of some of the Vodou Iwa (spirits) forming a
religion that grew out of a combination of African, native Arawak,
and Roman Catholic religious beliefs. This installation was first
featured in a special exhibition during the Atlanta Olympics and the
Sao Paulo Biennial in 1996 and is being brought together in Miami
for the first time. A color publication is available for purchase.

HAITIAN ART FROM THE BASS MUSEUM COLLECTION
Through July 23, 2006 (Gertrude Silverstone Muss Gallery)
Significant works from the Bass Museum's growing collection of
Haitian art will be on view, including an important painting by
Edouard Duval-Carrié entitled Mardi Gras at Fort Dimanche and other
Haitian paintings by Jasmin Josef and Audes Saul, as well as
examples of sequin-decorated vodou ceremonial bottles and flags by
Edgar Jean-Louis and Clotaire Bazile of the Bel Air School in Port-
au-Prince. Also included is an iron sculpture by Georges Liautaud
and Gabriel Bien-Aime, and a wood sculpture by Nacius Josef.
THE HAITIAN SPIRIT exhibition and programs are generously sponsored
by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Adorno & Yoss, P.A.
Employees Charitable Trust Foundation, Inc., Friends of the Bass
Museum Inc., and The Haitian Cultural Arts Alliance.

ARTURO RODRIGUEZ:THE HUMAN COMEDY
Through August 6, 2006 (Henri and Flore Lesieur Pavillion)
In this series, The Human Comedy, Cuban born Arturo Rodriguez paints
large-scale canvases filled with enormous distorted heads. The works
are not portraits in the traditional sense but rather, social
archetypes and caricatures. They reflect and transform the popular
culture of his childhood in a provincial Cuban town with the
distance of time and the skill of a seasoned painter. A 48-page
color catalogue is available for purchase.

Ongoing
TREASURES FROM THE BASS MUSEUM OF ART

on display on the Grand Ramp. Portraits in the Rococo and English
