'one of the best dance companies around' The Stage

Fresh from a successful tour of the cult classic Monkey (a co-production with Dundee
Rep Ensemble), Scotland's leading dance theatre company is to perform a brilliantly
weird and wonderful work by Belgian choreographer Jan De Schynkel at Zoo Southside
at Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2006.

The award-winning company received a Herald Angel Award for LUXURIA by Liv Lorent at
the Fringe in 2005 and returns with Jan De Schynkel's critically acclaimed No
Stronger Than A Flower. The work premiered earlier this year as part of the
company's Spring Tour.

Inspired by Shakespeare's Sonnet 65 ('how with this rage shall beauty hold a
plea/whose action is no stronger than a flower'), Jan De Schynkel has conjured up
another world with No Stronger Than A Flower - one packed to the rafters with
high-energy, daring dance as well as tender and funny moments, coloured with an
elaborate set and set to the atmospheric and richly dramatic sounds of Tom Waits,
John Lurie and The Lounge Lizards.

'thrillingly off-the-wall' The Herald

With a touch of David Lynch about it, No Stronger Than A Flower is a bold and
intriguing visual rollercoaster that casts a strange spell...

'A wild journey through Breughel-style Dutch paintings, sleek modern pop videos (the
trio in skin tight black looks scarily like those 1980s Robert Plant girls) and
eerie, ancient tales...' Sunday Herald

No Stronger Than A Flower is the third work ex-Rambert dancer Jan De Schynkel has
made on the company - his previous works for sdt include She Is As He Eats (which he
choreographed for the company after winning the Peter Darrell Choreographic Award in
2000) and Daddy I'm Not Well.

A former associate artist at The Place in London, Jan creates arresting and intense
theatrical experiences with an often bizarre sense of humour.

Scottish Dance Theatre is one of the UK's leading dance companies and won the
prestigious Critic's Circle National Dance Award for Outstanding Company Repertoire
(Modern) in 2003. sdt is guided by Janet Smith, one of the most respected and
established Artistic Directors in the British dance world today. sdt regularly
tours her work, that of international artists and work by newly emerging
dance-makers throughout the UK and internationally.
