EUROPEAN PREMIERE:
Liss Fain Dance San Francisco
Visceral. Emotional. Compelling.
EDINBURGH… Liss Fain Dance ignites the prestigious Zoo Southside Theater stage
with a dynamic, evocative and edgy repertoire during its European Premiere at the
2006 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Renowned for blending fast-paced modern dance with
the vertical lift of ballet, the nine member San Francisco-based company
captivates audiences with a three-week run at one of the Fringe’s largest venues.
In an era when many choreographers are exploring social issues, turning their
dancers into actors and acrobats and using multimedia special effects, Artistic
Director Liss Fain makes a radical move to strip things down. By juxtaposing group
and individual dances, Fain explores the constant flow between extremes: masculine
and feminine, power and grace, structure and spontaneity. Music is integral to
this process, and her musical choices have been heralded by Voice of Dance critic
Allan Ulrich as “a choreographer who takes the chances—with extremely important
and difficult scores and with an expansive vision of movement—that matter ... Fain
is about shape, expression, flow and musicality; qualities that may ultimately
prove immune to the ravages of time and fashion.”
From the haunting, intensity, created by Gyorgy Ligeti’s Piano Concerto in
“Unknown Land,” to the seductive, rhythmic crescendo of Hamza el Din’s composition
in “River at the End of Land,” Fain masterfully demonstrates the stirring capacity
of movement in combination with voice to express deep emotions. “I conceive of the
dance, the music and the visual environment as an indivisible unit,” she notes.
Another powerful new work entitled “When Still,” is set entirely to vocal music
that includes Claudio Monteverdi's “Madrigals of Love and War” and medieval
Gregorian chants recorded by Grammy-award winning Chanticleer.
The company has performed throughout the United States, and Ms. Fain has received
numerous awards from various private and public foundations like the National
Endowment for the Arts. Liss Fain Dance is available for touring and represented
by Cadence Arts Network,

“The range and depth Fain applies with such surety presents an all-out,
no-holds-barred physicality.” —San Francisco Chronicle
“The dancers sustain themselves in a slow, exquisitely sensuous flow of shapes
across the floor. It was a muscled, sinuous sort of continuity…difficult,
gorgeous, peaceful.”—DanceViewWest
