3. Lee Greenwood returns to Deerfield Beach for 4th of July
Posted by: "William" timoria63@yahoo.com timoria63
Date: Fri Jun 23, 2006 8:37 am (PDT)

Lee Greenwood returns to Deerfield Beach for 4th of July
On the 4th of July, Grammy Award winning artist Lee Greenwood will honor the City of
Deerfield Beach for the third time with a beachside concert on our country's most
patriotic holiday. Lee Greenwood has been a Deerfield Beach favorite since his first
concert in 2003. A follow-up concert in 2004 was just as successful, and this year
promises to be no exception.
Like many great careers, Lee’s had humble beginnings on a farm near Sacramento,
California. He began honing his musical abilities in Jr. High School, learning to
play most of the instruments in the orchestra by age 14. Both of his parents were
musicians, and Lee followed in their footsteps from an early age. He was quick to
acquire the musical and business skills that would prove necessary for his life as
an entertainer.
No “overnight success” story here. Lee--one of the most acclaimed artists
internationally—and often identified as virtually the ultimate name that comes to
mind when patriotism is mentioned in the entertainment industry--gained his
success the old fashioned way: He earned it, one rung up the ladder at a time.
After years of struggling to gain recognition in the music industry, one song—“God
Bless The USA”— in 1983 singularly transported Lee Greenwood far beyond the ranks
of stardom to a niche in America’s pop culture that is seemingly reserved for he
and he alone.
If any doubt existed of Greenwood’s “forever imprint” on America, it was dispelled
in 2003—the 20 year anniversary of its release—when “God Bless The USA” was voted
online by Americans as the “most recognizable patriotic song” in the nation. The
song that Lee Greenwood wrote bested competition that included “God Bless America”
and the “National Anthem” as a modern national anthem of the common man.
The staying power of this dynamic performer throughout twenty successful touring
years remains evident in every Lee Greenwood show. Thirty albums, numerous TV
appearances, and hundreds of radio interviews are all vehicles through which this
tireless performer maintains his visibility with the public. His celebrity tours
with the United Services Organization (USO), including his most recent USO tour in
September of 2003, are one of the many high-profile charity organizations to which
this humanitarian donates his time.
Lee noted in a recent interview: “If you’re smart, you learn pretty quickly that
life in the music industry is a journey that never really posts an ‘arrival time.’
I’ve loved the ride—the ups and even the downs—and it’s only thanks to God and a
lot of good people around me that I’ve stayed pretty steady no matter how hard the
ground shook. I think it’s a lesson we all collectively learned as a nation on
9-11. The ground shook, but when the dust cleared, we stood strong—prouder than
ever to be Americans.”
Lee Greenwood's concert begins at 7:30 pm at the Main Beach Parking Lot, Ocean Way
and SE 1st Street in Deerfield Beach. In the same location, before the concert,
from 2:00 - 6:00 pm, the city has teamed up South Florida Parenting for a Kids Fun
Event, featuring a water slide, music and interactive games, pie eating and bubble
gum blowing contests, hula hoop and dancing fun, hair art and patriotic tattoos,
and lots of prizes and giveaways. Immediately following the concert, at 9:00 pm,
the famous Mad Bomber will launch a spectacular fireworks display for the
Deerfield Beach International Fishing Pier. For more information on the City of
Deerfield Beach All-American 4th of July celebration, call 954-480-4433 or visit

6. June event at The Atlantic Theater - "Gated Community Improv"
Posted by: "William" timoria63@yahoo.com timoria63
Date: Fri Jun 23, 2006 8:56 am (PDT)

“GATED COMMUNITY” IMPROV COMEDY
LIVE AT THE ATLANTIC THEATER
SATURDAY JUNE 24TH at 8:00pm

Gated Community, a high energy improvisational comedy troupe, performs live on
Saturday June 24th at 8:00pm at The Atlantic Theater. Gated Community has been
entertaining South Florida audiences since the fall of 2004, and they combine
short form and long form improvisation, sketch comedy, video sketch, audience
participation and song parody, offering a show full of wit, charm and hilarity
along with a clever insight on the humors of everyday life that we can all relate
to. Gated Community shows are unique in that the performers get scene ideas and
suggestions from audience members, so no scene is ever pre scripted and the actors
never know which direction a scene may take.

Gated Community performs a brand new monthly show at The Atlantic Theater, and has
appeared at the 2006 Miami Improv Festival and opened for The Groundlings from Los
Angeles and Upright Citizens Brigade from New York City. It was their second
straight year performing at the Miami Improv Festival, a collection of the
country’s best Improv comedy troupes. Gated Community has also been invited to
perform on the main stage at Artigras 2006. Gated Community recently received a
2005 Impy award as best sketch comedy in Palm Beach County.

Every show offers a new theme, with brand new sketch comedy, improvisations and
videos. The theme for this show is a “best of” with all of the best sketches over
the past two years. Audiences continue to discover the humor and energy found in
a live Improv show, as the mix of sketch, improvisation, music and video leaves
patrons excited about the endless possibilities of live theater. Gated Community
takes comedy seriously….very seriously.

Tickets for Gated Community are $15.00 and students are $10.00. Tickets can be
purchased by calling (561) 575-4942. For further information please visit the

10. GableStage presents Florida Premiere of THIS IS HOW IT GOES
Posted by: "William" timoria63@yahoo.com timoria63
Date: Fri Jun 23, 2006 10:24 am (PDT)

GableStage is pleased to present the Florida Premiere of THIS IS HOW
IT GOES by Neil LaBute opening June 24th and running through July
23rd. This new play by our most controversial playwright is about an
interracial love triangle in small town America It is a fierce drama
of manipulation, exploitation, infidelity and passion. When it
opened last season at New York's Public Theatre—the New Yorker
wrote, "A writer of ideas! It is a great and rare thing to be
unsettled in the theatre. LaBute accomplishes that here!" The NY
Post called LaBute, "The first dramatist since David Mamet and Sam
Shepard to mix sympathy and savagery, pathos and power!" The
Associated Press called the play, "Darkly comic...no-nonsense truth-
hurts style...biting dialogue!"

The cast includes three of South Florida Theatre's most accomplished
actors--Todd Allen Durkin, Beth McIntosh and Brandon Morris.

Performance times are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm and
Sundays at 2pm and 7pm. There will be a preview performance on
Friday June 23rd at 8pm.

GableStage is located in the eastern section of the Biltmore Hotel,
1200 Anastasia Avenue, Coral Gables. Valet parking is available.
Free parking is available in the Biltmore parking area west of the
hotel. For more information or to purchase tickets, call the

THE SPECTACLE OF SOCCER

MIAMI ART MUSEUM PRESENTS
STEPHEN DEAN’S VOLTA
JUNE 13 – AUGUST 13

Just in time for the World Cup, MAM presents Stephen Dean’s Volta, which
transforms rumbling swarms of soccer fans in São Paulo and Rio de Janerio from
spectators into spectacle. Volta will be showing continuously June 13 through
August 13 during museum hours in MAM’s new video gallery.

“Like a musical composition, Volta harmonizes various pitches of emotion, from
breathless anticipation to disappointment and delirious frenzy,” MAM Assistant
Curator René Morales says. “Occasionally, Dean’s camera uncovers organized,
geometric patterns within the chaos. The scenes culminate with footage of
massive, homemade flags enveloping the throngs – peaceful waves of color washing
over a vast human ocean.”

From the paint-splattered festival of Holi in India to the glittering neon of Las
Vegas, Stephen Dean has created videos that seek, he says, “to maximize the
physicality of color.” Volta provides a timely and engaging demonstration of the
artist’s ability to distill the colors of daily life into a singular, emotional
essence.

In recent years, video art has had a tremendous impact on contemporary art
currents. In order to present developments in video art, MAM has inaugurated a
dedicated space for video projections in its Plaza Level Galleries. Works in the
Video Gallery run continuously during museum hours for a two-month period.

This presentation is organized by the Miami Art Museum and curated by Assistant
Curator René Morales. It is supported by MAM’s Annual Exhibition Fund.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Stephen Dean was born in Paris in 1968. He has presented solo exhibitions of his
work at Galerie Xippas in Paris, the Museum of Santander in Spain, Henry Urbach
Architecture in New York, Hales Gallery in London and Galerie Cohn-Edelstein in
Rio de Janiero. He has participated in group exhibitions at the 51st Venice
Biennale; the 8th Istanbul Biennial; the Fondazione Pitti, Florence; the Grand
Palais, Paris, and Site Santa Fe, New Mexico, among many others.

ABOUT THE CURATOR

René Morales was named Assistant Curator at the Miami Art Museum in 2006. He
played a significant role in the adaptation of the retrospective Ana Mendieta:
Earth Body for its presentation at MAM and co-curated the MAM exhibitions Mapping
Space and Miami in Transition. He is currently curating exhibitions in MAM’s Video
Gallery. Prior to joining MAM, Morales served as a curatorial intern at the
Museum of Modern Art in New York City and as a Curatorial Assistant at the Museum
of Art, Rhode Island School of Design. Morales, who immigrated to Miami from Cuba
in 1980, earned a Master’s degree in Art History from Brown University.

TONIGHT! 23 FRI 8:30pm:
The Great Directors: ROSSELLINI, 100 Years Old!
Stromboli (Rossellini/1950)
Ingrid Bergman loves cinema!
With Ingrid Bergman and Mario Vitale
Rossellini’s new (extra-marital) lover Ingrid Bergman, in an interesting parallel
to the drama in her own life, plays Lithuanian refugee Karin, who marries an
Italian peasant for a way of escape from her present post war situation, and she
finds out that his life on the almost deserted island of Stromboli is not an easy
change to acclimate to. The abstract serenity of a Catholic fisherman’s world
leaves Karin alienated and distraught, and her development in dealing with it
all plays out while the island’s volcano could explode at any moment. Stromboli
begins Rossellini’s “Modern Film” period, after his neo-Realist war trilogy.
It also ended the Hollywood career and reputation of Ingrid Bergman (temporarily,
until Anastasia) because of the scandal of her affair with Rossellini. With widely
varying opening reviews due to it’s rejection of Hollywood storytelling formulas,
it was considered a project as alienated as the character Bergman plays.
Screen life becomes real life, or is it the other way around?
“Rossellini's technique is thoroughly modern: it could have been made last week,
or next year, by Jean-Luc Godard. The island setting is made solid and real,
but the landscape still carries a powerful metaphorical force. The ending seems
all the more beautiful for being dramatically arbitrary…”—Dave Kehr Chicago Reader

24 SAT 8:30pm: “2005 Oscar® Films You Need To Know”
Oscar® Nominee: Best Documentary Feature Miami Premiere!
Darwin’s Nightmare (Hubertt Sauper/Austria Belgium/France)

your worst...
DARWIN’S NIGHTMARE, a clear-eyed examination of the underbelly of globalization.
Feeling more like sci-fi/horror than documentary, DARWIN’S NIGHTMARE is the
stranger-than-fiction tale of two relentless killing machines: the Nile Perch
which, over
the course of a few decades, ate through everything that used to live in
Tanzania's Lake
Victoria; and the foreign capitalists who introduced that non-native fish in order
to sell
it to European consumers. Losing out to both of these were the local Tanzanians who
once lived off the lake's bounty, and now, literally, are left with bones and
rotting
carcasses. When things take an even stranger turn, thanks to an astounding third-act
revelation, the relentlessness becomes a cautionary tale it may not be too late to
heed.
"A fascinating cautionary tale in the guise of a documentary showing how, in the
age of globalization, things can evolve in the worst possible of unforeseen ways.
Witty, incisive, heart-breaking, angry, shocking, and very imaginative." – Time
Out UK

25 SUN 8:30pm: “e-Incubator Shorts!”
The year's best shorts presented by Entertainment Industry Incubator

The top 15 finalists from this year's "Collaboration...A Short Film Contest" are
being
screened at MBC by the Entertainment Industry Incubator. This series of five minute
shorts qualified as among the best chosen by the judges earlier this year. See if
you can
tell which ones made it to the top of the top and whether you and the industry
VIPs who
made up the jury agree who are the best of our Florida filmmakers. The winning
filmmakers received a private meeting with Lion’s Gate Films in Los Angeles!

26 MON 9:30pm: “Shelley Novak’s Hollywood”
(An outrageous evening hosted by the illustrious film buff in drag!)
Andy Warhol’s BAD (Jed Johnson/1977)
Warhol's BAD T-shirt (here on "Blondie") available at MBC!
In the last film with the Andy Warhol name attached to it (unrelated to him having
anything creative to do with his films, according to last year’s MBC visitor Paul
Morrisey),
Carroll Baker plays a Serial Mom-style character running an electrolysis/ female
hit-squad
ring out of her house. The role was originally meant for Vivian Vance (I Love
Lucy’s Ethel),
who declined because she had fans being the nicest woman in America.
Nice the character ain’t…and outrageous, offensive, and hilarious the film is!
PLUS!... SOUTH BEACH, the new music video!
PLUS!...After Party...The FINALS of "Drag Wars" at Score! Get FREE tickets at MBC!
Maximus 3000 and Monserrattz directorial debut for "South Beach" the Music video;
the visual extension to Dance Planet X's music single and project "South Beach".
The
Video charms the viewer with it's multi-dimensional journey of the worlds that
comprise
the 'real' South Beach. An anthem for South Beach, it *"pays backhanded teasing
tribute
to Miami's Highlife" and addresses the duality of the onslaught of "Locust" like
tourism
that can plague, and yet symbiotically, help South Beach's economic status quo.
With its
coupling of Betty Boop lyrics and Andy Warholesque video editing, the Video and Song
are a monumental Miami masterpiece....an instant classic!

WARHOL DIARY ENTRY: "Read the rave review of Bad in the Los Angeles Times.
Went to Susan Tyrrell's party, it was great... I had to leave to go to the BAD
screening.
What was so great about seeing the movie at Filmex was that everything had such big
significance, suddenly, because the screen was so big, so much more Pop - like
that Santa
Claus knick-knack on Carroll Baker's refrigerator. I want to rent a big theater
for a
screening in New York. Got back to the hotel about 3:00."
—Andy Warhol , March 26, 1977

AND THE REST OF THE MONTH!...

30 FRI 8:30pm:
The Great Directors: ROSSELLINI, 100 Years Old!
Viaggio en Italia (Voyage In Italy) (Rossellini/1954)

With Ingrid Bergman and George Sanders
Roberto Rossellini, in his search for realism on screen, became one of the few
directors
in history where the land effectively becomes an integral character itself (in the
essence
of the previous neo-Realism period), affecting the human characters in profound
ways.
With Viaggio en Italia, he manages to subtly and elegantly tell the story of a
wealthy
British marriage in trouble (Ingrid Bergman and George Sanders as Catherine and
Alexander), with the background of the vitality of Napoli and the desolation of
Pompei
playing important roles in invigorating their lives. The Cashiers du Cinema critics
(Godard, Truffaut, Rivette, and Rohmer, all of whom became major masters of cinema
themselves a few years later), crowned the film one of the best of all time.
Meanwhile,
the mass audiences were once again not ready for Rossellini’s realism and rejection
of “plot”, which was being produced on a planet far from Hollywood.
“There are people who turn around and see the wall behind them, others see
twenty centuries.”—Roberto Rossellini
“Rossellini’s finest film, and unmistakably one of the great achievements of the
art.
…in one of the moments that only Rossellini can film, something lights inside them
(the characters), and their love is renewed as a bond of the spirit.
A crucial work, truthful and mysterious.” –David Kehr Chicago Reader

01 SAT 8:30pm: “2005 Oscar® Films You Need To Know”
JUDAICA on FILM: Sophie Scholl: The Final Days
Oscar® Nominee: Best Foreign Film (Marc Rothmund/2005)
The true story of Germany’s most famous anti-Nazi heroine is brought to thrilling
life in the multi-award winning drama, which is an Academy Award Nominee
for Best Foreign Language Film, 2005. SOPHIE SCHOLL stars Julia Jentsch
in a luminous performance as the young coed-turned-fearless activist. Armed
with long-buried historical records of her incarceration, director Marc
Rothemund expertly re-creates the last six days of Sophie Scholl’s life: a
heart-stopping journey from arrest to interrogation, trial and sentence. In 1943,
as Hitler continues to wage war across Europe, a group of college students
mount an underground resistance movement in Munich. Dedicated expressly
to the downfall of the monolithic Third Reich war machine, they call themselves
the White Rose. One of its few female members, Sophie Scholl is captured
during a dangerous mission to distribute pamphlets on campus with her
brother Hans. Unwavering in her convictions and loyalty to the White Rose,
her cross-examination by the Gestapo quickly escalates into a searing test
of wills as Scholl delivers a passionate call to freedom and personal
responsibility that is both haunting and timeless.
“Chilling authenticity! Grippingly portrayed! Julia Jentsch is terrific!
An ace performance!” –Derek Elley, Variety
WINNER: Jury Prize, Best Director, Best Actress Berlin Film Festival,
Audience Award, Best Actress European Film Awards, Outstanding
Feature Film, Audience Film Of The Year, Best Actress German Film Awards
