PRESS RELEASE: For immediate release
FESTIVAL DES ARTS DE SAINT-SAUVEUR 10TH ANNIVERSARY
Original production in international dance and the National Ballet of Canada
(Saint-Sauveur, June 22, 2006) “Anniversaries are a time to look back at all
that has been accomplished and to look ahead at new fields to conquer. In
this anniversary year, the Festival will be celebrating a decade of
achievement and breaking new ground artistically. This is truly the Festival
we have been building toward for the past ten years.”
That was how the Festival des Arts de Saint-Sauveur artistic director Anik
Bissonnette described the lineup for the tenth anniversary edition of the
Festival des Arts de Saint-Sauveur, which takes place from Thursday, August
3 to Saturday, August 12, 2006.
The opening event, Kylián Le grand, is an original Festival production in
international dance. It showcases the work of Jirí Kylián, one of the world’
s greatest living choreographers and the man who has been on the leading
edge of international dance for more than 30 years. With some of Europe’s
and Quebec’s finest performers, and film clips of Jirí Kylián introducing
the seminal works of his career, we trace his and modern dance’s movement
from the lyrical to the more abstract, offering audiences new insight about
the heart and soul, and indeed the sweat, that it takes to make magic
“This show is a real milestone for us,” says Bissonnette. “For the past
decade, Saint-Sauveur has been a major presenter of international dance.
This year we are also moving into the production of original shows and it is
something we plan to build upon in the future.”
Among the other dance headliners is the National Ballet of Canada. On August
11 it will be celebrating the Festival’s 10th anniversary with a special
program put together by artistic director Karen Kain. One of the world's
most exciting companies, the National Ballet will perform some of the most
important works of the trailblazer of contemporary dance, George Balanchine.
Another major dance event is the reprise of Coleman and Lemieux's Kudelka
Project, which played to sold out houses and critical acclaim in Montreal
this winter. “We are calling this event Kudelka la magnifique because that
was the headline in the newspaper when this show was performed in Montreal,”
says Bissonnette. “James Kudelka’s work has been described as going to the
core of dance and he has been so important to the development of dance in
this country that, in many ways, he is our Jiri Kylian.”
The Kudelka performance also features the internationally renowned
counter-tenor, Daniel Taylor, singing the ecstatic music of Vivaldi's Stabat
Mater. “With Kudelka’s choreographies and Taylor’s sublime voice, this will
be an unforgettable evening under the Big Top,” says Bissonnette.
The Festival will also be presenting an original choreography by Victor
Quijada, founder of Rubberbandance, with les Jeunes Ballet du Québec.
“Promoting young dancers is a very important part of the Festival and
something I care about deeply,” says Bissonnette, “and we are delighted that
Victor—who was one of the stars of last year’s Festival and one of the most
exciting young choreographers in the country—will be premiering a new work
on our stage.”
“We are thrilled by our dance line-up this year,” says Bissonnette, and it
is made even more special by the fact that we will have Vincent Warren C.M.,
director of the ENBC Library and one of the foremost dance experts in the
country leading post-performance discussions with a special guest from the
Among the music highlights is Robert Marien, one of Quebec's most versatile
singers and favorite showman, performs Broadway's best in Broadway Encore!
Accompanied by pop soprano Geneviève Charest, the Montreal Lyric Theater and
seven musicians under the direction of Denis Chartrand, Marien will light up
the night with Broadway hits.
The Festival will also be celebrating another important anniversary, the
250th anniversary of the birth of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart with Quatuor
Alcan, a quartet that is known across Canada and internationally for musical
excellence with a reputation built upon originality, enthusiasm and the
ability to communicate their unique musical vision.
The Big Top program ends on Saturday, August 12 with the Montreal Jubliation
Gospel Choir singing traditional and contemporary gospel music as well as a
joyful mix of chorales, jazz oratorios and traditional Zulu music.
"This is just a taste of what's in store," says Bissonnette. "Our
anniversary Festival will have more than 70 events, 60 of them free events
in Parc Filion and other venues around the village. Among these are two
shows a night of dance and music on the outdoor stage, a Young Artists
Festival, classical quartets on the terraces around town, Community Arts,
films on dance shown every night on a big screen in Parc Filion and an
exhibition of dance photography…All of the arts will be flowering in
Saint-Sauveur this summer!”
