DancenOw/NYC - The Festival
September 6 - 16, 2006
Produced by DancenOw/NYC
in partnership with
Dance Theater Workshop and Joe's Pub at the Public Theater
DancenOw/NYC presents the 12th annual season of The Festival this fall with
performances at Dance Theater Workshop (DTW) and Joe's Pub at The Public
Theater. Continuing its adventurous, boundary-defying 'festival/short takes'
format, The Festival kicks off the NYC dance season, celebrating the endless
and vibrant creativity of NYC area choreographers. From aspiring young
artists to mid-career innovators to the poetic and powerful performers of
the '4OUp' generation, The Festival brings a fresh sampling of dance in all
styles and forms, forging the possibilities and imagination of dance today.
The 2006 Festival season, which features 85 plus dancemakers and their
companies during its two-week run, opens at Dance Theater Workshop with six
performance events (September 6 - 9), presenting the work of 65
choreographers in three different performance series -- 4OUp, Base Camp and
Upclose. The Festival events at DTW will also include, for the first time,
a look at the collaborative work created by several multi-disciplinary
artists during the 'O6 Omi International Dance Collective residency. The
season continues at Joe's Pub at The Public Theater (September 14 - 16),
with the DancemOpolitan series featuring 30 dancemakers in three different
cabaret performance events hosted by choreographer Leigh Garrett. Each
Festival performance event includes 9-12 works of seven minutes or less --
'bite-size' choreographic gems!
A complete list of artists participating in the 2006 Festival is attached.

DancenOw/NYC follows its own path, bending the rules and embracing the
unconventional, to seek out new means to promote, challenge and develop the
artistic careers of a wide genre of choreographers and to connect new
audiences to dance. DancenOw/NYC's vision is directed toward the
development of an extended relationship with today's innovative dancemakers
- presenting their work in a variety of venues, promoting their work to new
audiences, and providing artists with the opportunity to create and develop
new work through its Silo residency program that offers free space and an
inspiring haven in which urban artists can come to create, process or just
escape the pressures of city life. DancenOw/NYC advocates the 'short
format' to encourage artists to create work that is far-reaching in its
influences and effects, but marked by brevity and clarity in order to appeal
to a broad audience. For the past two decades, DancenOw/NYC has offered the
avid fan and dance newcomer to programming that is distinct, accessible, fun
and reflective of the new direction and passion of today's dancemakers.
DancenOw/NYC is supported, in part, with funds from Altria Group, Inc.,
Barbara Bell Cumming Foundation, Jerome Robbins Foundation, LMCC's Fund for
Creative Communities/NYSCA, Edith C. Blum Foundation, Harkness Foundation
for Dance, NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, and Mertz Gilmore Foundation.
