Audacious Australian Troupe to Make Joyce Debut

July 11 - 15

The 2005 Bessie Award-winning company Chunky Move will make its Joyce debut
this summer with a one-week engagement, July 11 15, of I Want To Dance
Better at Parties, choreographed and directed by Artistic Director Gideon
Obarzanek <> . To
purchase tickets, please call JoyceCharge at 212-242-0800 or via the
internet at The Joyce Theater is located at 175 Eighth
Avenue (at 19th Street) in Chelsea.

Phillip, Jack, Franc, Lindsay, and Deon - five men, five stories. Part
documentary, part impressionistic dance work, I Want To Dance Better at
Parties grew out of video interviews choreographer/director Gideon Obarzanek
conducted with various men in order to write a treatment for a film
documentary. Dance became the starting point for discussions about other
aspects of life such as partners, parenting, loneliness, and loss.

Layered with these intimate video interviews, I Want To Dance Better at
Parties illustrates these five ordinary men¹s conflicted feelings toward
social dancing and ultimately reveals a lot more than expected about what
makes men move. From dusty dance halls to pounding nightclubs, the Chunky
Move dancers slide, jibe and spin in this entertaining and moving piece
featuring original music by Jason Sweeney & Cailan Burns.

I Want To Dance Better at Parties was a sellout hit at the 2005 Melbourne
International Arts Festival and won Green Room Awards for original
choreography, concept and realization, and best male dancer.

Artistic Director Gideon Obarzanek founded Chunky Move in 1995. Gideon
originally studied at the Australian Ballet School and danced with the
Queensland Ballet and the Sydney Dance Company before working as an
independent performer and choreographer with various dance companies.

Gideon and Chunky Move received a 2005 New York Bessie award for Outstanding
Choreography/Creator for Tense Dave, which was presented last summer at
Dance Theater Workshop. In 1999 he received a Mo award for best
choreography for Bonehead and the Prime Minister¹s Young Creative Fellowship
in 1996.

In its 11-year history, Melbourne-based Chunky Move has grown to become one
of Australia¹s major contemporary dance companies. Chunky Move¹s work
constantly seeks to redefine what is or what can be contemporary dance
within an ever-evolving Australian culture. The company¹s work is both
diverse in form and content; to date, the Company has created a number of
works for the stage, site specific projects in its home city of Melbourne,
and new-media and installation work.

Current and recent works include Wanted: ballet for a contemporary democracy

<> , Tense Dave
<> , Arcade

<> , Live Acts

debuted at the 1995 Melbourne Festival and has since toured extensively
throughout Australia and internationally, including the United States,
Singapore, Hong Kong, France, Germany, Hungary, United Kingdom, Colombia,
Japan, Belgium, Canada and Russia.

Chunky Move supports Australian dancers and choreographers through two
programs: the ³In House
<> ² program of daily
classes, workshops and events held in the Company¹s studios, and the
³Maximised <> by
Chunky Move <> ²
program that provides in-kind support to independent choreographers
producing and presenting their own work.
