Guest Speaker, Richard West of the Frye Art Museum

Olympic Ballet Theatre’s Producers’ Party

The Olympic Ballet Theatre Board of Trustees invites you join them for wine,
hors d’oeuvres, dessert, and this extraordinary guest speaker. Richard V.
West, director emeritus of the Frye Art Museum, is back by acclaim with his
illustrated program highlighting the great costumes and sets designed by the
Russian and French artists who worked with the renowned Russian impresario,
Sergei Diaghilev. The Producers’ Party will be held on Sunday, June 25
from 2:00 – 4:00 PM at Shell Creek Restaurant in Edmonds.

In two short decades, between 1909 and 1929, the Ballet Russes completely
transformed the world’s concept of modern ballet. Founded by Diaghilev, the
Ballet Russes combined the work of artists, musicians, and dancers in a new
and revolutionary relationship. As a result, composers such as Stravinsky
and Satie, dancers like Nijinsky and Karsavina, choreographers such as
Fokine and Massine, worked with artists such as Picasso, Braque, and Di
Chirico to create sensational works of art that engaged the eyes, ears, and
minds of the public.

West became interested in the stage work of Picasso while organizing an
exhibition of Cubist painting as a young curator at the Albright-Knox Art
Gallery. This interest was heightened by a meeting with Léonide Massine,
who encouraged West to look at the work of Russian artists as well. In the
ensuing years, West has collected many images relating to the Ballets Russes
and will present a selection at the event. West says that he is "delighted
to present this lecture about the painters and designers of Diaghilev's
Ballets Russes on behalf of the Olympic Ballet. Diaghilev was the
consummate impresario who transformed modern ballet in the early twentieth
century through his revolutionary fusion of dance, music, and the visual
arts. I hope my presentation will give a sense of the color and dynamic
evolution of the ballet during those seminal years."

“The excitement Richard brought to last year’s Producers Party was so great
we invited him back. His enthusiasm for this amazing era left us all
wanting more,” said Helen Wilkins, OBT’s Artistic Director. Chairpersons
for this event, Peggy Camden and Deanna Konkel, will ensure a memorable
time. For more information about this event, please contact OBT at (425)
