Newsletter, 7th June 2006
Before most of us head off for the summer holidays we thought we might send you a little news about our activities.
Kitt Johnson X-act has decided to add a new ensemble work to our tour repertory. The well received performance is called “Palimpsest”. A few openings are still available in connection with our “The Lemonkeepers” tour this autumn. Working with a classical ballerina in Helsinki was an enriching experience for Kitt. So are the workshops planned for the summer expected to be.
New Performance on X-act’s Tour repertory
Kitt Johnson’s latest ensemble performance “Palimpsest” was well received by the press as well as the public. Therefore we have decided to include the performance for 5 male dancers in our tour repertory.
“Palimpsest” is available for touring from October 2008 – February 2009.
“Palimpsest” is a mapping of the skin's two sides. Our bodies remind us that we are Nature and, like Nature in its essence, fluid and perishable inside. The skin separates us and the world, holds our flowing insides together and provides us with that mask with which we meet the world.
A presentation DVD is available – please contact us for a complimentary copy.
“Palimpsest” – Press Quotes:
Rich with pictures … five men fuse in sculptured body formations which resemble everything from sea anemones and jellyfish to sex organs and crinolines. It is also fascinating how Kitt Johnson sets focus on the interior via the exterior…reaching deep under the skin with five brilliant dancers on stage…With a magical touch, she transforms a theme of natural science to marvellous, humoristic and exquisite performance art.

Absurd slapstick served with poker-faced and fascinating body art, sculptured with a twist … Kitt Johnson creates something really unique when she turns the body inside out, lending balance new poise, or conjures up a different and unexpected insight, extracted from the anatomy’s smallest details … absolutely a must-see experience.

Spring in Helsinki
Kitt has recently returned from Helsinki where she was commissioned to do a solo for The Finnish National Opera Ballet. The solo was part of the NOKO project which presented 16 brand new choreographies at the four Nordic national ballets during the entire 2005/2006 season. One of the pieces was called ”Passage” – a result of a collaboration between Kitt Johnson and the Finnish ballerina Anneke Lönnroth.
Normally ballerinas and experimental modern dance belong to strictly devided worlds. Working for four weeks Kitt Johnson and Anneke Lönnroth have torn down a number of heavy barriers – within themselves as well as within each other.
Anneke Lönnroth explains: “As a classical dancer I always search for beauty in my body. For me it was quite new to search for something which did not always have to be beautiful. It’s a new way of using my classically trained body. And it was a new experience for me to discover that I can also be ugly and raw – and still feel at ease on stage. Even without wearing make-up!”
