In taking a walking visit today over lunch, who should I find as a pleasant surprise at the Henry Art Gallery's new exhibit of photographs, culled and based on the old Seattle Camera Club, but some photographs of dancers. As few of these I had never seen before in any source. Some of the art belongs to the UW, but others came from other collections.
Dance folk include: Pavlova -- who visited Seattle three times [here she is photographed in costume, including one w/the photographer]; Agnes de Mille; Martha Graham -- one from her 1930 residency at Cornish; a very striking and dramatic image and one of her doing "Lamentation;" several nudes of Doris Humphrey from 1922; Massine; and a couple of local, lesser-known dancers including some students.
